The pair, Martin David Rochelle of Norfolk, Va., and Richard Rodesky of Montgomery, Ala bama, admitted robbing the whisky store on Highway 17 be tween Maysville and Pollocks ville and inflicting the 22 stab wounds from which Jones died several hours later in a ’New Bern Hospital. .•-.Aj.v • They got about $280 in the rob bery and several pints of cheap booze. They admitted riding north on US 17 and simply look ing for a place to rob whete too many people were not around and they tragically enough caught Jones alone the county liquor store. VOLUME XXI Iwo Charged in Weekend Murder of Pamlico Countian at PollocksviHe ,-T Jones County Sheriff Brown Yates reports holding two men on open charges of murder fol lowing the death of a Pamlico Countian after a brawl Sunday night in a home near Pollocks ville. The dead man is Dan Boomer, a resident of the Arapahoe sec tion of Pamlico County, who suf fered a split head from a severe blow with a meat cleaver and several .25 caliber pistol wounds. Being held pending a hearing are Chess Roberts and Robert H. Chapman. The killing took place *t Roberts’ home, Yates sa$«. Cox had filed action against James Henry Byers of Craven County and this consent agree ment brought an end to the litf' gation. Fast Flying Marine Camp Lejaune Marine Lew rence Santavelli flew up US 258 Tuesday night in a stolen sports car, fuelled with a tank of mien gas and leading a parade in cluding Onslow and Lenoir Coun ty deputies, one Highway Patrol man and one Kinston Policemen who joined the chase as the New Jerseyite Leatherneck sped 110 miles an hour up Queen Street in what had to be the quickest passage through Kinston in his tory. The fleeing Marine rolled the stolen car four times four miles north of Kinston on NC 91 |s he tried to pass e truck on the wrong side. He escaped I serious injury but is under a handfull of indictments. Damage Suit February Accident :r«" Copper Wire Thief is Killed Thursday in Moss Hill Section A young man from Kinston route 2 who with a younger res ident of a local trailer park was stealing copper wire from utility lines in the. Moss Hill section early Thursday was instantly killed when he came in contact with a 22,000-volt ciinfent. Bond of Dover route search group at about midnight after his 14 year-old son, Clif mPti' found his way put of I In Jones County Superior l Court this week Allen Daven port has filed a civil action in which he seeks to recover $75,000 damages from Odell Louis Lee and Albert Lewis Mal lard. The suit stems from an unusual accident on February 22nd of this year about three miles east of Trenton on NC Highway 58. Davenport’s suit says' he was attempting to attach a chain from Mallard’s car to another car that was stuck on the shoulder of the road, and that Mallard permitted the front end of his car to project onto the paved portion of the road, and in that condition another cat driven by Lee hit the front end of Mallard’s car, pinning Davenport between the Mallird car and the one he was trying to fasten the chain to. Davenport says m his com plaint that he suffered a brok en neck and several other less serious injuries which kept him in the hospital for about two weeks. ■ He alleges medical expenses of $816.10 and loss of wages in the amount of $2160, based on earn ings of $180 per week at the time of the accident. For this and the permanent nature of his injuries he is ask ing the court to-award him $75, 000 because of the joint negli gence of Mallard and Lee. alarm. -David Murray was not so luc ky. Petition for'Partition Monette Land Pat on Trial Docket of High Court " '-■» . '• Eleven Cases are Cleared Last Week In Recorder's Court During the past week 11 cases were cleared from the docket ofi Jones County Recorder’s Court by trial or by pleas of guilty. The only case not involving a traffic charge was that in which Mike Griffin paid $16 for pub lic drunkenness and disorderly conduct. ’In the traffic department James Coy Griffin of Trenton route 1 was found not guilty of drunk en driving but was fined $10 for reckless driving. Bobby Craig Allenin of Cove City paid $26 for reckless driving. Speeders who paid off includ ed Robert Moyer, Mickey Mc Donald and M. G. Irwin all of Camp Lejeune and Linwood Lee Jarman of Kinston route 2. Other miscellaneous traffic tickets were paid off by V. 0. Murrell of Pollocksville route 1, Thomas Morehouse of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Thomas Rav Dawson of Kinston ad David Tuggle of Camp Lejeune. DAVENPORT ELECTED Dr. George Davenport of Trenton was named one of two vice presidents of the North Carolina Coroners and Medical Examiners Association last week at the annual meeting of the group in Chapel Hill. A special proceeding held Sep tember 19, 1966 in which Ern est and Josephine Huff, H. H. and Mary Monette Green, Mil ton and Mamie Monette Sykes, Osbyn and Martha Monette Sim mons, John and Ruby Monette Burns, Annie Monette Jenkins, Claredon and Essie Monette Yates and Earl and Albertina Monette asked the court to par tition a 40-acre tract of land in White Oak Township in which they alleged'a one-helf undivid ed interest has been put on the trial docket of Jones County Su perior Court. Joseph Franklin and Gracie Monette, who were described as the owners of the other one-half undivided interest in-the 1966 petition have (filed an answer in which they claim ownership in fee simple of the entire 40 acres, by virtue of a deed from Manley and Lurlejr Mines, dated Decem ber 13, I960; .The answer also asserts that Joe and Grace Monette further lay claim to the land by adverse possession since they have been in open occupancy of the land for more than 20 years. The original petitioners claims their right to the land from their father John D. Monette who died intestate February 24, 1934. The defendants in the action assert that at the time of the death of John D. Monette there was a mortgage against the prop erty which resulted in it being sold, and subsequent to that was their purchase of the land from the Hines. The Rockets finished the season with a record of 7-2-1, finishing third in the East Cen tral Conference. The Rockets were playing Fri day night without the running and passing of fallback Leslie Strayhorn. -The only scoring was set up in the third quarter when Junior' Bob Faulkner dropped the Knight’s Danny Moore four yards behind the line of scrim mage on-a fourthdown play. • Jones Central moved the ball 76 yards in 8 plays behind the fine running of Senior halfback William Hawkins. Hawkins car ried the ball once for 37 yards around the end and again for 17 yards. The six-pointer came on a 11 yard jump pass from QB Dalton Ange to end Jimmy Smith. Jones Central moved the ball well against the defense of Northern Nash. In the first quarter the Rocket’s offensive unit moved from its 35 to the Knights’ 7 behind the passing of Ange. The Rockets moved inside the opponents 40 yard line twice the second half. Jones Central’s offensive unit was spurred along by the Tun ing of Hawkins, the passing of Ange, and the receiving of Hawkins ran up 97 yards in 17 carries. Ange completed 4 of 9 passes for 69 yards. Every pass was caught by.$nd Jimmy Smith, nsively, Bob Faulkner made "i'1"" —tako his year total 129. Defensive end Smith had 19 tickles and line backer Joby Arthur made 11. The Rockets also beat the Knights in Statistics. Jones Cen tral ran up 202 rushing yards to North Nash’s 110. The Rockets .made 14 first downs while Northern Nash made 11.
