J-tf Hog Cholera Progress Report For October 1968 There were no cases of hog cholera diagnosed during Aug ust; five were diagnosed dur ing September, and five in Oc tober. The cause of two of the outbreaks that occurred in Oc tober has not been determined, and they are still under investi gation. The above cases occurred in the following counties: Dup lin, Bladen, Columbus, Harnett, and Pender. By the decrease in the number of hog cholera outbreaks it is evident that North Carolina has made progress in the hog cho lera eradication program. To make a successful disease eradi cation program, it is essential that the disease be located and confined' — and not allowed to be spread from herd to herd. Prompt and early reporting is essential. Farmers who have s sick-Swine should contact their veterinarians at once. If this can not be done, they should contact the county extension agent, voca tional agricultural teacher, or a State or Federal veterinary of ficial. This prompt notification is important for several reasons: 1. Prompt diagnosis will en able quick, efficient treatment of the disease affecting the herd, if it is not hog cholera. 2. If hog cholera is involved, prompt diagnosis and quarantin ing will minimize chances of the disease spreading to other herds. 3. Indemnities can be paid only for animals living at the time of the initial inspection by a State or Federal veterinarian. Local veterinarians, county ex tension agents, and vocational agricultural instructors have done an excellent job in educat " ing the swihf producers with | respect to th# diseise‘and the eradication program. There is - still more to be done. Constant 4 and continued vigilsjace will be necessary as we move into the final eradication phases.
