lished, by using a large rotating
antenna, that moat of the noise
was caused by lightning flashes.
But he also detected a peculiar
hissing which was identified as
radio signals from outer space
—Signals that reached us in the1'
form of static.
Actually, astronomers ? do
not listen to the static, but
record the intensity of radio,
radiation on darts. With the
construction of large radio tele
scopes in the 80s, it became
possible to map large areas of
the heavens from the unseen
“radio stars” that emit these
signals. Interestingly, the
strongest signals came from the
center of the Milky Way.
What causes these noises? It
has been determined that the
origin of this radiation is the
interaction between gas clouds
of colliding galaxies over 200
million light-years away, these
gas donas and those in our
own universe contain neutral
atomic hydrogen—the most
common element in interstellar
space. Before the daysof radio
astronomy thare was no way to
detect or study it. Now,
through our radio data, we can
learn now much of it there la In
ourgalactic system.
