Telephone Company Unionized Price of Service Will Shortly Move Upward A union contract Detween Car lina Telephone and Telegraph Company and Communications Workers of America (AFL-CIO) was ratified by a vote of the eligible employees Monday. The vote was 1,028 in faVor and 96 against. Contract negotiations began in November, 1968. The contract, the first in Caro lina Telephone’s 69-year history, was effective May 5, 1969, and covered a period of two years. Eligible Plant Department em ployees voted 649 to 585 in favor of a union last July, while those in the Traffic Department vot ed 721 to 490 for the union in September, 1968. Although the union will repre sent craft and clerical em ployees in only these two de partments, the wage increases and other benefits will affect employees of all other depart ments. Generally, the starnng pay for clerical employees, including op erators, will be increased $3.50 per week, and the maximum uased by $8.00 per week in the contract year 1969. The starting rate for most skilled craft employees will rise .$5.00 and top pay will be in creased $8.00 to $10.00 week ly for the first year of the con tract. included in increased benefits are one additional holiday in 1969 (Memorial Day - May 30) and three weeks Vacation for employees with 10 years ser vice in 19691 Previously, em ployees with 15 years service were granted three weeks vaca tion.
