^SUICIDE LAST WEEK “
Coroner Raymond Jarman has
ruled the death of Wesley Korn
egay suicide. The 42 year-old
farm worker was found in his
home where he lived alhng on
Sunday. Investigation tended to
support the view that he had
been dead since Tuesday. He
bad shut himself in a closet and
shot himself.

even to hold a job that someone
has found and foisted upon
them.
Yet the children of this shift
less, sorry family need food and
clothing and shelter and medical
care and education as much as
the children of the first men
tioned family.
Viewed as one who spent two
terms as a county welfare board
member, this writer believes
that Nixon’s plan is a good one
but it needs to go just one step
further and that further step is
to provide an easier method of
removing children from totally
unfit families where even the
broadest public welfare program
actually does the child little
good, and in instances which
such totally unfit .parents are
found a legal system for sterili
zation of such parents — father
and mother<— should be imple
mented to cut off the flood of
unwanted, uncared for children.
Opposition to this suggestion
stems from church people, ra
cial leaders and from some sec
tors of the academic society;
but with the world confronted
by the ultimate necessity of
some kind of state-enforced birth
control it would be a logical and
moral step to begin first with
the proven unfiij parents before
such controls sure extended to
good parents.
Any program aimed at solving
the poverty problem that does
not include a workable birth
control plan has very little
chance of success.

WHAT IS THE
ANSWER?
by Henry E. Garrett, Ph.D.
PROFESSOR EMERITUS,
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
PAST PRESIDENT.
AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL. ASSOCIATION
Q: Dr. Garrett, I know this
may sound stupid, but just what
is a person's IQ?
A: That is not stupid at all.
There are many people who talk
of IQ without actually under
standing wthat it means. Actual
ly, the two letters represent the
words “Intelligence Quotient.”
The letters, generally, are as
sociated with the Stanford-Binet
tests devised by Dr. L. M. Ter
man many years ago. Dr. Ter
rain sought to determine a per
sons potential rather than his
knowledge. Technically, the tests
disclose the ratio of a person’s
mental age to his chronological
age. The IQ, then, seeks to meas
ure a person’s potential, not 'his
knowledge. ■
