.Your Neighborhood Burglar Can Get Rich
So don't make it any easier for him the next time you and
the family go vacationing off somewhere for any extended
i rarely select their intended victims at rahdom. They’d
much rather have you make their choice for them instead. For*
getting to stop your milk, mail or newspaper deliveries before
you leave on your trip can be as
careless as leaving home with the
front door wide open. It doesn’t
take much guesswork on the burg
lar’s part to recognize a home left
unoccupied when the doorstep’s
littered with all this unread and
unopened material. An(j even if
your home goes unburglarized,
the nagging uncertainty caused
by failing to perform a few simple
pre-trip precautions may' turn
your carefree vacation into a
haunting experience.
So why worry about the things
■ • you forgpt to take care of before
you left when it’s so simple just to follow the handy checklist
compiled by the editors of this year’s Mobil Travel Guide below.
CHECKLIST FOR A CAREFREE VACATION ( ... or
What To Do Before Leaving Your Driveway):
1. Notify local police
2. Stop milk and newspaper deliveries
3. Discontinue garbage pick ups.
4. Arrange for safekeeping or forwarding of mail.
5. Lock all doors and windows (basement too). Leave shades up.
6. Disconnect electrical appliances; however, for protection
leave one or more lights connected to an automatic timer
to turn them on and off each evening.
7. Turn off all gas jets, including hot water heater. .
8. Remove food and defrost refrigerator.
9. Turn off water faucets; drain pipes in severe weather. ..
10. Turn'thermostat to minimum heat requirement
11. Arrange for care of plants and pets.
12. Store valuables.
13. Leave house key with friend, along with probable itinerary
and emergency phone numbers.
Last week the question was
asked about planting hydrangeas
at this season /of the year. I
suggested that this could toe
done if you could locate con
tainer grown (“canned”) plants.
I checked with one of our local
nurserymen and found them in
good supply. Now the ques
tion of flower color in hydrang
eas has been raised.
Perhaps, first, it will be best
to distinguish between some of
the types of hydrangeas because
all types do no produce colored
flowers. Some of the types are:
Peegee, Snow Hill, Oakleaf,
Climbing and Bigleaf or French.
Of these types, only the pink
varieties of the Bigleaf or French
fiydrangea (Hydrangea macro
phylla) will turn blue, under
certain conditions of soil en
vironment.
The question naturally aris
<es: what causes a pink hydrangea
to turn blue? The change in
color is due to the presence of
aluminum in the flower tissues.
"What about changing a blue to
t
a pink? This can also be done
by regulating the soil pH.
For example: at pH 5.5, or
slightly below, pink varieties of
hydrangea (macrophylla) will
produce blue flowers. In this
case, soil acidity is an indirect
factor in x the production of blue
flowers because of the relation
ship to soluble alumnium in the
soil. The aluminum is soluble
and available to the plant at
this pH.
On the other hand, blue flow
ers may be changed to pink by
raising the soil pH to approxi
mately 7.0. In this case the
aluminum is not in soluble form
and therefore not absorbed by
the plant.
To answer the question about
color and color change in hy
drangeas we can suggest the
foildiving procedure: if you want
blue flowers, have your* soil
tested and add enough alumin
um sulfate to lower the soil pH
to 5.5 or slightly below. For
pink flowers, add enough lime
(hydrated’ preferred) to raise the

soil pH to about 7.0 or slightly
above.
Flowers of intermediate hues,
between pink and blue, may be
produced if the scdl pH is main
tained at 0.0 or slightly above.
