ing by pinching instead of by
cutting with a knife, he may
be able to reduce the spread of
the wilt diseases. Also, county
extension agents may be able
to help next year in selecting
wilt-resistant varieties of toma
toes. But this possibility de
pends on the type of wilt pres
ent.

have also been noticed in some
greenhouses. Again, prevention
offers more hope than cures.

bacco products in the green
house or around the plants, Dr.
Averre said. Tobacco can con
tain the virus that cause to
bacco mosaic and certain dis
eases of tomato plants. Elimi
nating weeds around the green
house before the crop is plant
ed is another way of reducing
the possibility of virus infec
tions.
Root-knot nematodes can be
a problem, but as with viruses
and wilts, little can be done to
control nematodes on establish
ed plants. Fumigation before
planting is the answer to the
problem.
Dr. Averre said that green
house operators can get excel
lent information on diseases
and other problems from their
county agricultural extension a
gent. .
“Remember,” he added, “that
tomato greenhouse operations re
quire a great deal of attention
to pest control and sanitation in
addition to good management.”
