H you read “Garden Time” last week you will remember that I discussed the modus oper andi of the All-America Selec tion trials, and discussed two gold medal zinnia varieties for 1971, “Peter Pan Plum” and “Peter Pan Pink.” We will con tinue with other winners in the flower trails for 1971. First an F-l. single Dianthus chinensis hybrid “Queen of Hearts” which received a silver award for 1971. It is the first FI hybrid dianthus and is not .da for its vigor, uniformity and mass bloom characteristic throughout the summer and fall. The erect growth reaches a height of 12 to 15 inches and is 8 to 12 inches across. ' “Queen of Hearts” has bril liant scarlet red single flowers which are 1 to 1% inches wide and grouped in small clusters. The leaves give a dense cover to the base of the plant. This variety is classed as a hardy an nual and may overwinter in mild climates. It blooms well from seed the first year planted. Hibiscus (moschentos) “South ern Belle” is also a silver medal winner for 1971. This new va riety, a vigorous F-l hybrid, grows to a height of 5 to 6 feet and has 7 to 10-inch single flow ers. The flowers of “Southern Bel le” are formula mixed — crim son, red, rose, pink, white- and white with a red eye. It will bloom from seed the first year planted if the seeds are planted indoors and the small plants set in the open. The tops die down with hard freezes but will come up and bloom for many years. Snapdragon, “Little Darling,” .wins a bronze medal award. It is a open-faced F-l hybrid color mixture that grows about 12 inches tall. It is similar to “'Bright Butterflies,” a previous hut taller winner. This variety withstands windy locations quite well and is excellent for both cut flowers and landscape bor der planting. A hollyhock “Silver Puffs, a bronze medal winner, is the first hollyhock. It grows only about 2 feet tall. The fluffy double flowers are a delicate silvery pink. There is only one vegetable for 1971 — “Early Xtra Sweet” sweet corn. It is reported to be truly extra sweet. The ears are 7 to 9 inches long and 1% to 2 inches in diameter. It has 12-16 rows of kernels per cob andi grows to a height of 5 to 6 feet. “Early Xtra Sweet” is a bronze medal winner for 1971.
