In the lower parts of Yanny and Mitchell the temperatures were around 20 above, while 14 above is reported from Linville. u y u price Ten Cents iJtf ., , , j Y Y Dobbin By Ashton Chapman The Western Carolina Championships Contest, sponsored by the World Twirling Association, with headquai'tei's in Napoleon, Ohio, will be staged in S p r n c e Pine Saturday, April 2t, bejriiiriinjir at 9:.'io a.m. in Harris High School gymnasium. Trophies and medals are being- offered for 14 separ ate events, in each of which croups of vi'iicus ajjes will compete. At least 50 girls and yotdijr women are ex P' cted to be here. Most of them will compete in three to five or more different events. A larpe throng- of spectators is also expected to be present. Mothers of members of Harris Hieh School band and band members will as sist in operating conces sions which will offer soft drinks and liht refresh ments throughout the day. Baton twirling, which started as a fad, has been rapidly gaining in popular ity. Competition is wide spread and offers a chance to travel, and nnvt a n d maxe inenos irom al the world. Cood sport ship is only one of the fits, because colleges over o w offer scholarships to out standing twirlers. It will be recalled that in various bauty contests exhibitions of baton twirling have been presented in the talent div ision. Bobby Seagroves lc?ion 9 Oi Baptist Training Unicn Re-elects Seagroves The Region IX Training Union Convention meeting in the Bakersville Baptist Church last Thursday after noon and night, April 15th, was described as the best in several years according to the Regional Director, Rev. Bobby Seagroves, pas tor of the Bakersville Bap tist Church. The attendance was over 340 people present. The ladies of the Bakers ville Baptist Church served 200 meals. The young peo ple of the Church helped in th parking and registering those present. Rev. Seagroves was re elected the Regional Direc tor and Rev. Harold Mc Donald, pastor of the liurns ville Baptist Church, was elected the assistant Direc tor. Miss Virginia York of Burnsville was elected as the Regional Junior Leader. The Regional Meeting for 190(5 will be held in the First Baptist Church of Ha zelwood. These classes are being sponsored by the Mitchell County Council of the Home Demonstration Clubs in co operation with Marion In dustrial Education Center. Mrs. Conley demonstrates her craft each year at the State Fair at the Village of Yesteryc ar. Her work has been at na tional exhibitions and she also teaches each year at the Western District Craft Camp sponsored by the North Carolina Organiza tion of Home Demonstration Clubs. These classes will be held in the basement of the county building in Bakers ville from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon and 1 :ti0 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day. Items to be made include Earrings, ash trays, decor ative items of aluminum or copper. The only charges will be for supplies. Utirnsville, North Carolina Spruce Pine, Newland And Burnsville Students Urged To Classes - Deadline Operation Seccnj Chases Very Successful By Ashton Chapman Nearly 500 high school drop-outs have been bene fited through Operation "Second Chance" which has been conducted in Mitchell, Avery and Yancey Counties with federal funds supplied under the Area Redevelop ment Act. Scott Wiseman, coordina tor of Area "B," who has maintained headquarters in the Fortner Building in Spruce Pine since Operation "Second Chance" started functioning in September, 19(:', says the project h a s now been completed and he closed his office last Fri day. Offices which were maintained in Newland and Burnsville. has also been closed, 'i he program has been bailed by educators, busi nessmen and other commu nity leaders in the three counties and in other areas as a highly successful one. A total of 474 young people, of whom approximately 70 per cent v.ere boys, regis tered for the program; 179 completed training; 9:5 were placed in jobs; 12 were served but not trained and jobs were found for 80 of these, Wiseman reported. Training courses were conducted in carpentry, au 1.0 service station mech anics, bricklaying, welding, upholstery and curtain mak ing. Each course required 10 weeks of actual training i plus academic work at each ! student's individual level of I learning. ! Register Now For For Requests May 15 Summer School will b e held again this year at Har ris High in Spruce Pine. This is the third consecu tive summer session here. Dates for the school, which is under the direction of Robert G. Young, principal, are June 14 - July 2:5, hours 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. daily. Courses offered will be Typing I and II, Algebra I and II, Biology, English (for make-up only) and Chemistry. If as many as 10 register for Geometry and ''thr courses, they will be offered also. Students from four counties have attended Har is High Summer School at Spruce Pine in the past. Those have included stu dents from East Yancey High School, Bowman High School, Tipton Hill, Cross nore High School, Morgan ton High School, Pleasant Gardens, Marion High School, Cane River, North Cove and Spruce Pine. Those who plan to attend this summer school are urged to register with Mr. Young soon, either by mail or in person, as the dead line for registration is May 15. Rev. Charles Nanney Cikercviile Baptist Church Revival Enis April 25 The Rev. Charles Kanne? of Taylors. S. C. is the Evangelist in the Revival Services in the Bakersville Baptist Church this week. The services are at 7:150 each evening. They will continue through Sunday' night, April 25th. Rev. Nanney attended Wake Forest College a n d Sruthern Baptist Theologi cal Seminary. He is at pre sent the pastor of the Hampton Heights Baptist Church in Taylors, S. C. Visitors are welcome to any of the services. A nur sery is provided each eve ning.
