Evans, headmaster of St. Timothy's Lower School in Raleigh, died Dec. 9. A scholarship fund has been created in her name at St. Timothy's Middle-Hale High School. Locke to head Duke Endowment Elizabeth H. Locke, director of the education division and communica tions for the Duke Endowment in Charlotte, has been named exec utive director of the $1.5 million- asset foundation. She starts her new job April 1. Locke will be the first woman to serve as execu tive director of the Duke Endowment, which is the 13th-lai^st U.S. foundation. She suc ceeds Jere W Witherspoon, who is retiring after 26 years with the foun dation, the last three as executive director. Locke will continue to head the education division. A new communi- Elizabeth Locke cations officer will be named. The foundation is making three other staff changes. Eugene W. Cochrane Jr. will become associate executive director and will continue to head the foundation’s hospital divi sion; Janice Walker will become chief financial officer and will continue to serve as the foundation’s treasurer; and John G. Mebane Jr., the founda tion’s senior investment officer, will become chief investment officer. Locke, who has bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in En^h from Duke University and a master’s in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has worked tor the Duke Endowment since 1982. She pre viously was corporate contributions officer at Bethlehem Steel Corp., direc tor of university pubhcations at Duke University and an En^h instructor at Duke and UNC-CH.
