IMS MISS JEAN MARIE TORRENCE, SOCIAL EDITOR Mrs. Fisher Honors Husband and Mother On Saturday, April the 8th, at live-thirty in the afternoon, Mrs. Katie Fisher gave a surprise birthday dinner honoring her hus band, Mr. Edward R. Fisher, and her mother, Mrs. J. A. VanDyke of North Belmont. The dinner took place at the home of Mrs. Van- Dyke. Lovely mixed gladioli and but tercups decorated the home. Din ner was served outside and many nice gilts were presented to the honored guests. Those present were Mrs. Ed ward Fisher, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Neal Stone and children, Vicky and Gloria, Mrs. David Henkle, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gray and son, Michael, Mr. and Mrs. Ed- w’arf Fisher, Jr., all of Mount Holly; Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Woods and children, Richard and Martha, Mr. and Mrs. M. W. WED ON EASTER SUNDAY Miss Underwood Fetes Wedding Attendants Miss Mary Ellen Underwood entertained her wedding attend ants with a dinner party at her home Wednesday night. At this time Miss Underwood presented her attendants with pearl neck laces, her gilt to them. Covers were laid, for the host ess; Miss Edith Underwood, sis ter ol the bride-elect and maid of honor; and bridesmaids, Mrs. R. C. Rhyne of Charleston, S. C.; Mrs. Carl H. Underwood of Mil waukee, Wisconsin; Miss Nancy Garrison of Charlotte; and Miss Frances Moore of Mount Holly. Jtfrs. Turner N. Burton of Richmond, Va., who is the guest of Mrs. l6ithleen L. Herald, was also a guest. Mrs. Tom Clark ol Canton, ac companied by her son, Walter Clark and Mrs. Clark of Chapel Hill, and Albert Cline of Duke University, Durham, spent Sun day here with her sister, Mrs. E. L. McCorkle and Mr. McCorkle. Mrs. Clark remained lor a visit of several days at the McCorkle home, the others leaving Sunday evening. The condition of J. W. Moore, who is a patient at Mercy hospi tal, Charlotte, is showing im provement. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. McCorkle had as recent guests the latter’s brother, Ralph Crawford and Mrs. Crawford of Canton. Rev. Donald O. Mclnnis, pas tor of First Presbyterian church, accompanied by Avery M. Smith, att«nded a Presbytery meeting in Rutherfordton Tuesday. Miss Betty McCorkle of At lanta, Ga., spent Easter weekend here with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Talmage Morgan and family spent the Easter holi days in Columbia, S. C. as the guests of Mr. £ind Mrs. D. W. Wil son. Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Clark left on Tuesday to drive their two daughters to Raleigh. Sally is in school at Meredith College and Laura works at N. C. State. The Clarks returned to Mount Holly on Wednesday. The girls had been home with their parents for the Easter holidays. Miss Jo Frances Hollar, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gwyn Hollar, and Tommy Lee Wnite- side, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Whiteside, exchanged the vows of marriage at the altar of First Methodist Church in a ceremony of unusual beauty and marked impressiveness taking place Eas ter Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o’ clock. Rev. Ivon L. Roberts, pas tor of the church, officiated, using the double ring ceremony. Church Decoratioits The chancel and choir loft of the church were banked with palms, interspersed with seven- branched candelabra holding lighted cathedral tapers, forming a background for a massive cen ter arrangement of calla lilies. Pews for special guests were marked with bows of white satin ribbon. Wedding Music Prior to the ceremony a pro gram of nuptial music was pre sented by Mrs. Thomas M. Hol land, organist, and Mrs. David E. Robinson, vocalist. Mrs. Holland’s numbers included "Clair de Lune'* by Debussy, "The Rosary” by Ne- vin, "Benediction Nuptial” by Dubois, and "I Love Thee” by Grieg, and Mrs. Robinson sang “Through the Years” by You- mans and “Because” by D’Harde- lot. Traditional marches by Wag ner and Mendelssohn were used as processional and recessional, and during the service Mrs. Hol land played "At the Altar” by Arensky. Bride's Gown The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white satin. designed with round neckline, nylon yoke, wide satin bertha, fitted bodice pointed at the waist, long sleeves ending in points, and a very full skirt which flowed into a train. Her only orna ment was a strand of pearls. Attendants* Dresses. Miss Barbara Hollar, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and the matron of honor was Mrs. Lyndon Parker of Elizabeth City, sister of the bridegroom. Brides maids were Miss Glenda Hollar, the bride’s sister, and Miss Rita Ramsey of lincolnton, niece of the bridegroom. All the attend ants were gowned in sleeveless dresses of filmy lime ninon posed over almond rose taffeta to form changeable colors, fashioned along the same lines as the bri dal gown, with wide bertha, off- the-shoulder effect, fitted bodice and circular skirt. Their head dresses were matching coronets in the same design as -that of the bride, and they carried trail ing bouquets of ripple ivy cen tered with cattlea orchids. Best Man. Ushers Ralph Wilson, Jr. attended the bridegroom as best man, and ush ers were David E. Robinson, B\jr- mah Carpenter, Manuel Grier and Gene Painter. Mrs. Hollar, mother of the bride, wore a dress of aqua crepe with black and pink accessories and a shoulder bouquet of pink rosebuds. Mrs. Whiteside, the bridegroom’s mother, wore a two- piece dress of navy crepe with navy and pink accessories and a shoulder l^uquet of pink rose buds. Wedding Trip Later in the afternoon the cou ple left on a trip, and for travel ing the bride wore a beige gab ardine suit with nav>’ and pink accessories. At her shoulder she pinned the orchids from her bri dal bouquet. Upon their return the couple will be at home at 3004 Tuckaseege Road, Charlotte. Bride and Bridegroom The bride was graduated from the Mount Holly High School, and has held a position here with the Holland Drug Company. A popular member of the young so cial set, she has received a num ber of social courtc sies since the announcement of her engage ments The bridegroom was also grad uated from the local high school, and has served a year in the U. S. Navy. He now holds a position with the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Charlotte. A large number of out-of-town guests attended the wedding. Mrs. Parker Hostess Traditional Ceremony On Saturday evening immed iately following the rehearsal for the wedding of Miss Frances Hollar and Tommy Whiteside, Mrs, Lyndon Parker of Elizabeth City was hostess at the tradi tional cake cutting party, enter taining at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. White- side. Arrangements of white gladioli and snapdragons decorated the home, and clusters of silver wed ding bells hung from the chan delier in the dining room and over the living room-dining room arch. The dining room table was overlaid with an imported Irish linen banquet cloth and centered with the three-tiered decorated wedding cake topped by a minia ture bridal pair. A large arrange ment of white gladioli flanked by lighted white tapers set in sil ver candelabra graced the buffet. After the bridal couple had cut the first piece, Mrs. Willie Ram sey of lincolnton finished cutting the cake, with which bridal ices and punch were served. Only the bridal party, mem bers of the two families and a few additional guests attended. Mrs. Parker was assisted in en tertaining and serving by Mrs. Ramsey and Mrs. Nash Parker, the latter of Morehead City. Plans For Wedding, Are Now Announced Miss Mary Ellen Underwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 1* R. Underwood, has completed plans for her wedding to James Wil liam Reeves, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Reeves of Stanley. The wedding will take place April 16 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at 5:30 o’clock. Rev. Carl H. Fisher, pastor of the bride, will officiate. The mu sic will be presented by Miss Georgia Lynn Huddle, organist, of Williamsport, Maryland, and Mr. John S. Quimby, Jr., soloist, of Charlotte The bride-elect will be given in marriage by her father, and the bridegroom-elect will have R, Carlton Rhyne of Charleston, S. C., as best man. The ushers will be Joffre Hart, Vance Hun ter, Gilbert Hart, all of Moimt Holly, and James Fraley, of Statesville. Miss Edith C. Underwood, only ' sister of the bride-elect, will be maid of honor. The bridesmaids will be Mrs. R. Carlton Rhyne of Charleston, S. C., Miss Frances Moore, Miss Nancy Garrison of Charlotte and Mrs. Carl H. Un derwood of Milwaukee, Wiscon sin. After the ceremony the couple will receive their wedding guests in the vestibule of the church. A series of parties have been given in honor of the couple. C. Roberts, the president, conducting the business session. Mrs. Elmer Meller was in charge of the program, and Mrs. E. J. Gowan presented the devotional. Appearing on the program were Mrs. Frank Maness, Mrs. Arthur Cogdill, Mrs. Lloyd Bynum, Mrs. Mrs. DuRant Hostess For Hei^ Bridge Club On Saturday night of last week, Mrs. Allen DuRant enter tained her bridge club at a love ly bridge party. The hostess serv ed a delightful dessert course with coffee to the members. After the progressions were completed, the scores were to taled and the high score prize was presented to Mrs. James Ware. Mrs. Frank L. Rankin won the second high award. Other club members attend ing were Mrs. C. S. Clegg, Mrs. Flynn Warren, Mrs. James Dav enport, Miss Bain Henderson, Miss Elizabeth Spratt, and Miss Mary Jo Rhyne. to the roll of the Union at this meeting. The Easter Sunrise prayer service held at the church prov ed to be a splendid worship ex perience for all those who at tended. Opening the service with the hymn, “Fairest Lord Jesus,” the pastor gave an inspirational mes sage, and testimonials were giv en by many members of the con gregation. A rededication act closed the service. A large congregation was pres ent. The David Robinsons Give Dinner Party Among the pre-nuptial social affairs honoring Miss Frances Hollar and Tommy Whiteside, whose wedding was an event of Easter Sunday, was a dinner par ty given by Mr. and Mrs. David Robinson at their home on the Mountain Island Road. Bridal flowers were used as decorations and dinner, was serv ed in three courses. The bridal couple received an honor gift. Miss Underwood Receives Shower Miss Nancy Garrison of Char lotte and Mrs. R. Carlton Rhyne of Charleston, S. C. entertained on Tuesday evening at the Gar rison home in Mount Holly. The occasion was to honor Miss Mary EUen Underwood, whose wed>- ding to James William Reeves will take place on April 16. Miss Garrison and Mrs. Rhyne are to be attendants in the wedding. The home was decorated in green and white and the bridal motif was carried out using white flowers, ivy, and wedding bells. Green and white bridal ices were served and the bride-elect was presented a china shower. Forty guests were invited from Charlotte, Mount Holly, Stanley, and ^Imont WEEKEND AWAY Mr. and Mrs. James.
