THURSDAY, APRIL 9TH, 1936
A recent survey of a number
of colleges such as Princeton,
Yale, Harvard and others prov
ed that young men do not ad
mire girls who use too much
make-up. They also stated that
they prefered girls with good
cmomon sense rather than
beauty' and not much sense.
And the boys did not like
bright colored nails.
People in this section are very
fortunate and should be very
thankful. We have) had no flood
and so far there has been no
visit from a tornado.
Newspapers cannot describe
the horror that must ac
company these things. It’s hor
rible enough to read about
them, but to have to go through
them, is one of the most dread
ful events that one can imagine.
Greensboro was rather close
home to Person County people
and many here had relatives
in the area where the tornado
struck (none were injured.)
Hundreds of people from this
county visited the section that
was hit otter the week-end and
all report horrible scenes.
We should be thankful in
more ways than one.
One of the nicest theatres in
this section of the state is the
new Dolly Madison that is open
ing today. This theatre is not a
largq theatre, but it has every
thing that the best can boast
of. It is modern from start to
finish and the seats are ele
vated to just the right height
so that one can See without
stretching his neck for an extra
foot.
We are glad that Mr. Kirby
is going to play first run pic
tures. It would be a shame to
put old pictures in such a nice
theatre as the Dolly Madison.
Mrs. Dolly Madison was a
beautiful lady the Dolly
Madison theatre is a beautiful
place of amusement.
Some people say that there
is very little money in this
county at the present time. Re
gardless of whether this is true
or not Roxboro has been crowd
ed with people from the county
every day. If they are here,
they must spend a little money
and every little bit helps make
the wheels go around.
It has been too wet to do
any plowing to amount to any
thing and for this reason the
farmer is bejhind with his crop.
This time last year this paper
was carrying ads on flues for
tobacco barns.
Easter Sffhday and Monday
will probably call for a large
amount of automobile driving.
Many people have already made
plans to take a nice Easter trip
and naturally thousands of
people will be on the highways
that are not in such good shapie.
i Please remember that many
people have recently lost their
lives in floods and tornados and
that the death list for the
! South is high enough.
Drive with care. Take your
time as you go. Remember that
it doesn’t make any difference
whether you break a record or
niot It’s entirely in the hands
' of the driven whether many
people live or die between no*
and Tuesday.
Do your part and drive safe
ly.

JOLSON SONG HITS
MAKE FILM MEDLEY
IN “SINING KID”
Dolly Madison Theatre Ealster
Monday and Tuesday, April
13th and 14th.
Here’s a “reel” romances some
thing new in movie matrimony.
Here, if you please, is a marriage
between a “montage” and a med
ley.
All of which sounds a bit com
plicated, but, translated from film
lingo, it simply means that a series
of swiftly interblended screen pic
ture flashes will be accomplished
by a series of quickly changing
snatches of various songs. The
“montage” (quickly intercut pic
ture scenes) has been used in count
less movies. The song medley is
commonplace. The conjoining of the
two is new.
This novelty, quickly to register
with audiences some snappy and
happy reminiscenaqs of A1 Jolson’s
stage and screen success down the
years, has been recorded as the
unusual opening of his latest First
National musical, “The Singing
Kid,” which comes to the Dolly
Madison Theatre on Monday and
Tuesday.
Tfee “montage” consists of screen
flashes of special backgrounds,
with Jolson in blackface in each
case, of such hit shows as “Robin
son Crusoe, Jr.,” “Bombo,” “The
Singing Fool” and ‘Go Into Your
Dance.”
The medley, snatches of each
chorus sung by the stellar show
man, consists of such old favorites
as “Swannee,” “Rockabye Your
Baby With a Dixie Melody,” “April
Showers,” ‘California Here I Come”
and, of course, “Mammy.” “Sonny
Boy” and “About a Quarter to
Nine” chorus bars will be sung to
the screen-play flashbacks.
“The Singing Kid” combines
rollicking comedy with heart throb
bing drama and spectacular music
al numbers. Besides Jolson the cast
includes Sybil Jason, Beverly Rob
erts, Edward Everett Horton, Lyle
Talbot, Allen Jenkins, Claire Dodd
and Wini Shaw. The Yacht Club
Boys and Cab Calloway and his
band also are featured.
NEWSPAPERS TO
CARRY MESSAGE
Will be Principal Medium to
Carry an Extensive Campaign
on Oldsmobile Advertising.
3300 PAPERS TO BE USED
Newspapers of thq nation Wave
been selected as the principal me
dium to carry an extensive Olds
mobile advertising campaign, now
under way, it was announced today
by V. C. Havens, Oldsmobile adver
tising manager.
“We are convinced that the mes
sage of Oldsmobile’s high quality
and outstanding value can be told
by the use of newspapers.” said Mr.
Havens. “Expanded production fa
cilities in 1936 have made possible
the manufacture of more Oldsmo
biles this year than were ever be
fore built in a twelve month period.
“The lower pridqs of the 1936
Oldsmobile Six and Eight, together
with the increasing popularity of
• the cars, and the fine records they
are making in the hands of owners,
point to the existence of a greatly
expanded market for Oldsmobile
again this year.
“So we have launched a newspap
er campaign, not only in the large
metropolitan dailies, but likewise in
smaller dailies and in weeklies, to
carry the story of Oldsmobile’s
style safety, comfort, economy and
performance to millions of Ameri
can newspaper readers.
“More than 3300 newspapers are
being /used, and (the expenditure
of a much larger sum than ever be
fore has been sp>ent by Oldsmobile
in any single year in newspape*
has been authorized.”
