VOLUME vm. EFFORTS BEING MADE TO SECURE NEW BANK Proposed Institution Would be National Bank With $50,000 Capital Stock and $i 0,000 Surplus. The news has recently been re leased of the efforts of several in dividuals in Roxboro to establish another bank here. If their efforts are successful, the new bank will be a National bank. Present plans indicate that the new bank, if organized, would be located in the old First National Bank building which will be re modeled. Efforts are being made to get people to subscribe for stock in the proposed bank to the extent of $50,000 capital stock and SIO,OOO surplus. It is reported that over half of this stock has been sub scribed to. The committee that has charge of the selling of stock is composed of J. W. Montague, Sr., T. Carlyle Brooks and J. E. Kirby. J. A. TIMBERLAKE TRANSFERRED TO GREENSBORO Fred Masten Will Have Charge of Roxboro Office as Timber lake Takes Over Gretensboro Office of Geo. W. Kane. J. Anderson Timberlake, popular official of the George W. Kane or ganization, has been transferred to Greensboro and will take active charge of the Greensboro office of that company. Mr. Timberlake has had charge of thq Roxboro office for a number of years and it is with many regrets that Roxboro people see him leave. Fred Masten, who has beten with this company in Durham, has been transferred to Roxboro and will take charge of the office here. He is a Roxboro native; and has many friends in this county. Roxboro people feel as though they lost a fine citizen and gained another. Large number Agreed to Join at That Meeting. GOAL OF 100 MEMBERS MAY BE PASSED BY SATURDAY NIGHT Unless something happens that has not yet been conceived of the country club project will be a suc dqss. At a combined meeting of the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs Monday night approximately 60 people agreed to join the club. A committee composed of Chas. Harris, Jake Taylor and E. G. Thompson wa£ appointed to canvas the city and county to see if there were more people who wanted to join. This committee now reports that approximately 88 have stated that they would join and the can vass has not been completed. Over 100 may be secured by Saturday. The proposed club will be at Loch Lily with the old club house as the center of activities. It will offer members bathing, boating, fishing, tennis, golf and an ideal place for parties and other social functions. The club house will be repaired, tennis courts built and also a golf course. Other forms of amusement will be provided later. From thq results attained so far it looks like the people have want ed a place of this kind and that they are willing to enter with much en thusiasm. Although the above report sounds good Mr. C. A. Harris stated he was very anxious to secure more members at once. If you are in terested you are requested to see C. A. Harris, Jake Taylor or E. G. FREE SCREEN TEST TO BE GIVEN STATE WINNER The Roxboro Woman’s Club is sponsoring an evening of entertain ment for Friday, August 7, at the high school, when it will put on a “three-in-one” program of interest to all. For the children there will be a Shirley Temple pageant, the winreqr receiving a Shirley Temple dress. The other two features are an amateur program, open to all who wish to compete, and a beau ty contest in which “Miss Roxboro” will be selected. Winners of these events will have their expenses paid to the State-Wide Beauty Show in the fall. The Woman’s Club earnest ly solicits your help in making a success of this project. For any further information, call or see Mrs. R. D. Hardman. To the child winning first place in the Shirley Temple Parade a Shirley Temple dress will be pre sented. The girl that wins first place in the Beauty Pageant will go to the State Contest, all expens es paid, and a free screen test. HARVEY LONG HAS OPERATION Harvey Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin Long, of Route one, ,was carried to Watt’s hospital last week and underwent an operation for ap pendicitis on last Thursday. FUNERAL LAST TUESDAY Mrs. Susie Ford Young, 77, wife of the late Henry P. Young, died at the home of her son, Dewey Young, of Roxboro, on Monday, July 27th at 3:55 p. m. Death was attributed to old age and compli cations; she had been in declining health since February and had been ill for six wdqks. Her husband died on the 26th of February this year. She was a much loved Christian lady of her community. She is survived by five sons, R. K., E. M. Young, of Roxboro; G. A. Young of Angier, N. C., H. D. Young, of Roxboro, N. C., J. H. Young, of Knoxville, Tenn. Four daughters, Mrs. G. C. Buchanan, Mrs. Mag Long; Mrs. Mattie Eva Buchanan; Mrs. G. N. Gentry, all of Person County. 50 grandchil dren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral services were con ducted at Providence Baptist church on Tuesday, July 28 at 4 o’clock p. m. Rev. N. J. Todd, as sisted by Rev. W. F. West and Mr. K. D. Stukenbroke, was in charge of the services. Active pallbearers were: Grand sons, Claud Buchanan, Richard Young, Edward Young, Archie Long, Thomas Young and Malcus Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers were: G. C. Davidson, G. W. Walker, Ed Ash ley, C. C. Penticost, R. J. Buchan an, Henry Whitt, C. P. Gravitte, R. J. Whitt, B. B. Knight, L. D. Puc kett, Frank Howard, Robert Wade, J. Larkin Gentry, Willie Gentry, C. L.
