Mixed summer flowers were pret ty iA the living room of the homo where the club game of bridge was enjoyed for some time at two tables. At the conclusion of the game scores were counted and prizes were giv en Miss Claire Harris for club high score and to Mrs. Anderson Tim berlake for visitor’s high score. Mrs. Merritt served her guests a delicious sweet course. o Tuesday Club Meets With Mrs. Long On Tuesday morning at 10:30 o’clock Mrs. B. R. Long was hostess to the Tuesday club at a lovely bridge-luncheon. Summer flowers made the home especially attractive for the occasion. Bridge was enjoy ed at two tables. Upon addition of scores Mrs. E. V. Boatwright was found club high scorer, while Mrs. E. E. Thomas scored high for visi tors. Both of these were given a double deck of playing cards.' Mrs. Long served her guests a delicious two-course luncheon. o Business Woman’s Circle Meets The Business Woman’s Circle of the First Baptist church held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Hilda Thomas on Monday night of this wdek. The meeting was opened with devotion al of which Mrs. T. B. Brooks was in charge. Mrs. W. W. Woods had charge of the program, the topic of which was “A Summer Cruise Through Home Mission Fields.” Those taking par* on the program were: Mesdames E. M. Bailey, Dewey Young and Hilda Thomas. A business session followed the program. The hosttes served punch, cake and nuts to the following members: Mesdames W. W. Woods, J. J. Woody, E. M. Bailey, Dewey Young, H. A. Clay, T. B. Brooks, C. C. Holeman; Misses Mabel Montague, Maudfj Montague, Sue Frederick and Mary Riley. The next meeting will be held with Mesdames C. C. Holeman and W. K. Moore as joint hostesses on September 14. o Mrs. Brooks Is Honored As a courtesy to Mrs. Page Brooks, who before her recent mar riage was Miss Lois Hayes, Mrs. Alvin Warren was hostess at her home on Reams Avenue last week. Five tables Were arranged for hearts dice in the living room and reception hall amid a lovely setting of summer flowers. Following sev eral progressions high score prize was awarded Mrs. Griffin, while low score award was given Miss Dorothy Warren. The bride was presented a lovely monogramed lin en luncheon set. After this the guests were carried into the dining room where a shower of gifts were presented to the bride. A delicious ice course was served to the guests. o Barnette-Farrior Miss Texie Elizabeth Barnette, daughter of Mr. Zebulon Vance Barnette, of this city, was married to Mr. Edward Milton Farrior, of Burgaw, N. C. on Wednesday, Au gust 12, 1936, at the First Presby terian church of Wilmington, N. C. Only a few friends were present for the ceremony. Mrs. Farrior is a very attractive member of the social set of this city. She is a graduate of Duke University, and for the past several years has taught in the city schools of Burgaw and othqr places. Mr. Farrior is a very prominent young business man of Burgaw. He is manager of a department store of that city. The couple left imme diately aftier the ceremony for a honeymoon trip to Myrtle Beach and other points. After August 20th they will be at their home in Bur gaw, N. C. Thursday Club Met Last Week * On Thursday evening of last week Mrs. Thomas Dixon entertained the members of the Thursday bridge club at her home in Ca-Vel Circle. Zinnias were tastily arranged in the home, and the club game was enjoyed at two tables. Several hours vtere spent in play; scores were added at the conclusion of the game. Mrs. Cris Waggoner was giv en the prize for club high score Mrs. S. M. Ford won consolation award, while Mrs. Bell won visitor’s prive. Mrs. M. J. Cunningham as sisted Mrs. Dixon in serving a tempting salad course to the fol lowing guests: Mesdames Gus Deer ing, F. H. McDonald, Mrs. Bell, guest of Mrs. McDonald, W. G. Bradsher, S. M. Ford, William War i*eji and Cris Waggoner. o First Annual Tobacco Ball Roxboro’s first annual Tobacco Ball will take place Tuesday night, 1 August 18th at the local high school gymn. This ball is be,ing conducted by several members of the high school alumni association and preparations adq being made to ! make this one of the greatest j events ever to take place in Rox boro. The committee has beta very fortunate in securing a nationally known orchestra for this occasion, Wesley Kay and his orchestra, play ing the Lombardo Style music. Kay’s Orchestra has been heard over N. B. C. and Columbia net work, also playing the leading ho ] tels of the United States and a long contract qt the Kit Kat Club, Lon don, England. Squirrel hunting comes first. The game Wardens are warning all about hunting out of season. It has reported that more people from this county are taking vacations this year than in the past eight or nine years. Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach are very popular, with Person County people. All of the streets of Roxboro that have been in bad shape are now being resurfaced. When finished they will be as good as new. Hugh Sawyer reports that a drive will be made for new mem bers of the Chamber of Commerce in a very short time. Ht> requests that you be ready to join. It is understood that not one single Japanese Beetle was caught in Roxboro this summer. Several traps were placed in different plac es in the city by the state depart ment of agriculture. New teachers for this county this year are Miss Elizabeth Lan caster, New Bern, N. C., to teach at Olive Hill.
