THURSDAY, OCTOBER IST, 1936
On Monday, Oct. sth, the
Roxboro tobacco market opens.
It is thought now that all of
the warehouses in Roxboro will
be full of tobacco on the open
ing day and there will probably
. be a large amount here every
day in the week.
Roxboro sold over four and a
half million pounds of tobacco
last year and those who are
supposed to know say that over
six" million pounds should be
sold here this year. The capaci
ty of the Roxboro market with
nne set of buyers is about eight
million pounds per year.
There seems to be no doubt
about the fact that the Roxboro
market is growing and will con
tinue to grow during the com
ing years. By the end of next
year this market should be
Belling near capacity. After we
reach the eight million pounds
the officials will probably try to
get a second set of buyters and
they should not experience the
' difficulty doing that that a mar
ket experiences when trying to
get a third or fourth set.
Roxboro has a good market.
The mjarket here has always
been good and has always
maintained a high average.
Last year's average was $20.26
and only four other markets
nut of 18 in this belt beat that
average. These markets beat it
by only a fraction of a cent.
This average was made in spite
nf the fact that much of Person
county’s best tobacco went to
nther markets.
The readers of the editorial
are perhaps thinking that we
.are admitting quite a few things
that are not so favorable to
Roxboro .such as the fact that
much tobacco went out of the
county, and that four markets
beat us, etc., but we are trying
to state the plain truth. Rox
f boro doesn’ claim to be the
1 largest market in the world;
many things could be better
bere, but we do have one of
the best little markets in the
tobacco producing states and a
market that will compare with
any in the world when it comes
to price and price is what
the farmer wants when he gets
ready to sell his year’s work.
We "urge you to sell your to
bacco in Roxboro. By doing
i this you will get as much or
‘ more money than elsewhere,
you will get prompt service and
you will help your own city
i Mud county.
We make no bones about the
matter when we say that we
i want your help and need your
kelp. If you have any tobacco
to sell you can help us or you
: c«n hurt us, either by selling
here or not selling here.
Roxboro invites you to sell
1 here this year next yfear and
on and on. Roxboro offers no
apoligies in extending this in
vitation, and Roxboro and Per
son county will be a better
place if you do your part.
The Times is pleased to pre
sent its Annual Tobacco Edi
tion. The publishers of this
paper trust that it will be the
means of helping the tobacco
market here.
To all who have made this
edition possible, we render our
sincere thanks.

thirty years ago when what is now

a conflagaration representing the
