Society MISS CAROLINE MICHAELS Social Editor U. D. C. Met Last Wednesday The November meeting of United Daughters of Confederacy was held Wednesday a. m., at the residence of Mrs. A. W. Clayton on Oak St. with Mrs. W. D. Merritt as joint hostess. It was decided at the busi ness meeting to send a Thanksgiv ing of fruit to Person Coun ty’s three Confederate veterans. Mrs. R. H. Gates gave a very in teresting paper on “The Confeder ate Museum,” at Richmond, Va. She described the N. C. room and some of its contents after which re fpqshments were served to each of the sixteen guests present. ■ o Wednesday Afternoon Club Mrs. John D. Morris was hostess to the Wednesday Afternoon Club at her home on Foushee street. The living room was decorated in lovely yellow chrysanthemums where three tables were placed for Contract Bridge. The scores were tallied after several progressions. Mrs. W. E. Bowles was presented the club prize. Mrs. Sallie Morris received the consolation prize. Oth er prizes were presented to Mes dames F. W. A. Mills and W. C. Bullock. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. J. A. Vaughan, served a delicious turkey course with coffee and a sweet course. —o Dewey Herring, 4-H club boy of Greene County, produced 58 bush els Os corn on his club acre this season. Dewey planted his corn in alternate rows with soybeans. Three tables were placed in the living room. After several progres sions were played, Mrs. S. M. Ford was presented the club prize while Mrs. G. H. Ellmore was presented the low score prize. Mrs. Robert Burch was presented the visitor’s prize. A sweet course with coffee was served. Lucky Five Club Little Miss Marian Winstead was hostess to the Lucky Five Club at her home on Reams Avenue. After an hour of entertainment the fol lowing guests were served hoti chocolate and cookies: Misses Ar lene Hall, Marian Palor, Emma Susan Brooks, and Panthtep Bullock. o Philathea Class Meets Mrs. George Barrett and Mrs. G. C. Duncan were hostesses to the regular monthly meeting of the Philathea Class of the First Bap tist church, on Tuesday, November 10, at the home of Mrs. G. C. Dun can on the South Boston Road. The meeting was called to order by the president, Miss Lottie Bailey. The devotional was read by Miss Bailey. After the regular business session was held, there was a so cial hour. In celebration of Mrs. W. F. West’s birthday, each guest was blindfolded for a few minutes. The guests then opened their eyes to confront a cake with a question mark in the center. There were presents around the cake whicn were presented to Mrs. West. The hostess served a congealed salad with sandwiches and coffee. o Friday Afternoon Book Club Mrs. R. J. Tfepgue was hostess to the Friday Afternoon Book Club at her home on South Main street. Five tables were placed for the club game of Boston Rook. Thq home was artistically decorated in lovely fall flowers. The hostess assisted by Mesdames E. E. Bradsher, J. A. Long and Misses Rosa Hamlin, Eviq Long, served a delicious turkey and ham course with coffee and frozen ices. o Entre-Nous Club The Entre-Nous Club met at the home of Mrs. George Thomas on Reams Avenue, Thursday evening. Three tables of Bingo were plac ed in the beautifuljy decorated room. Mrs. Gilbert Carver was pre sented the high scortet while the floating prize went to Mrs. Reade Jones. Since it was the birthday of the hostess and Mrs. Bill Minor, they were showered with lovely gifts. The hostess served a salad course and a sweet course consisting of plum pudding and ice cream, ■ o Seniors and Teachers Entertained The Seniors and Teachers of the Roxboro high school, were enter tained at a 7 o’clock dinnter, Friday night, by one of their graide-moth ers, Mrs. E. E. Thomas at her home on Reams Avenue. The lowty floor was decorated in lovely fall flowers which were ar tistically arranged. Mcßroom, the president, pre sided over the meeting. Mrs. S. G. Winstead and Mrs. E. B. Yancey were in charge of the program. The roll call was answered by current events. Mrs. Yancey read a very in teresting and informative paper on “Modem Miracles.” Mrs. S. G. Win stead read the second paper on the “Life of H. G. Wells, which proved to be very interesting and ably handled.
