CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
INVESTIGATING
It has been reported in this city
that a modern Pied Piper paid a
visit to Roxboro about a month ago
and guaranteed to free certain
buildings of rats providing those
who occupied the buildings would
free themselves of a certain amount
of money. The man who claimed to
do this called himself P. Morrow
and claimed to be representing a
certain product company of States
ville, N. C.
Mr. Morrow had a nice contract
and everything that went with it.
He collected immediately after the
bait was put out and then he “sold
out.” He stated that if the rats did
not disappear within a reasonable
time that he could be located at
437 West Front St. in Statesville.
The rats did not disappear. In fact
one man who paid the bill stated
they gained in weight, but that his
old family cat died the next day.
Mr. O. L. Bane, secretary of the
Chamber of Commerce, is making
an investigation and trying to locate
Mr. Morrow. Mr. Bane stated that
1 e was here to help in matters of this
kind and was anxious to do what
he could toward bringing men like
this to court. He is today ordering
a supply of rat poison from the
government and stated that a cam
paign to rid the city of rats might
be put on at a later date.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS
TO BE PREPARED
F. D. Long Makes Appeal to
People to Make Dona
tion For Those Who
Are in Need.
ANYTHING APPRECIATED
BY THOSE IN CHARGE
Again we appeal to you good
people of Person County, for a
Email donation iso as to make it
possible for some of the Old People
and unfortunate children to have
a little gift for Christmas, that oth
erwise would not have anything.
We have carefully gone over our
list and studied conditions very
closely. There are 125 old people
including inmates alt the Cbunty
Home. Several of this number be
ing 100 years old, and a good many
near that age. Os this group we
have a man and his wife who have
been married 68 years. The man
has been totally blind for 32 years,
and his wife is almost blind. They
live in a very small one-room cabin
to themselves, with no way of sup
port except by the county. We have
many little children living in such
unfortunate homes that unless we
contribute will not have the pleas
ure of having Santa Claus for
Christmas. We who are more for
tunate should take pleasure in re
membering them and contribute to
wards this great cause. The Lord
has wonderfully blessed us in many
ways this year, of which I hope we
all are thankful. We should show
our appreciation and thankfulness
by giving a part of what he has
blessed us with to those who are
less fortunate, for he has told us it
was more blessed to give than to
receive. We are very busy with our
work and we do hope you good
people will make a liberal volun
tary contribution. If not you may
be called on and I truly hope you
will not turn us away, but will re
member these- Old People still
have tender hearts that like to get
a little bit of cheer once a year.
What gives a child more pleasure
than Santa Claus? Anything you
feel like donating to this cause you
may give it to Miss Edna Wilker
son, Mrs. T, C. Wagstaff or myself,
just as soon as you can and we will
promise you to do our best and see
that this money is wisely spent and
justly distributed.
