Irene Dunne Stars In “Theodora” Due Today At Dolly Film Marks Her Debut As Co medienne “Theodora Goes Wild,” starring Irene Dunne in her first major role as a comedienne, will be the next attraction, at the Dolly Madison Theatre. The film begins a two day engagement starting today. For the first time in a career stubbed with such dramatice gems as “Cimarron,” “Back Street,” “Mag nificent Obsession,, and “Showboat,” Miss Dunne turns to the gay, light side of life, with gratifying results. Playing opposite the titian-haired star in the role of a happy - go - lucky illustrator is Melvyn Douglas, one of Hollywood’s most popular actors. Others in the large cast are !niomas Mitchell, Thurston Hall, Rosalind Keith, Spring Byington and Margaret McWade, one of the “pixi lated sisters in “Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.” In “Theodora Goes Wild,” Miss Dunne is seen as a small town “no body” who becomes famous as the author of sophisticated novels. When she falls in love with Douglas, whose estranged wife refuses to give him a divorce, she takes a page from her own novel and launches a cam paign of wildescapades to gain her objective. Believing that comedy stars for whom special original material mus. be written should not make more than one picture a year, the come dians spent most of the past year in selecting a story back-grcund, whipping a plot into space, and ori ginating comedy situatons. With them on the picture were six writ ers, Director Sam Wood and Pro ducer Lawrence Weingarten. Six months were required to plot the original basis for the picture and turn this material into a stage act of an hour and a half’s length. Two months were then spent in re hearsing this stage act and present ing it for four shows a day, seven days a week for week engagement; in five cities extending from Chi cago to San Francisco.
