F. D. R DESERTERS’ LASHED BY PEPPER Florida Senator Criticizes Col leagues For Assuming Emergency Is Over Washington, June 17.—(AP)— Senator Claude Pepper, Florida Democrat, took his colleagues to task today for deserting their Presi dent. During debate on the administra tion’s $1,500,000,000 relief bill Pep per, a freshman in the senate, re called President Roosevelt’s inau gural address in January, calling for further extension of the social fron tiers, and said “a strange thing” had happened. “Every time a bill to extend the social frontier comes before this body something happens to it.” Pepper said opponents of the re lief program were “too enthusiastic” in assuming the emergency was over. Replying to charges that the new deal program was degenerat ing, he asserted that “if we continue to degenerate during the next four years as we have in the past four years, our national income will soon reach $89,000,000,000, or $90,000,000,- 000, the highest point in, history.” Senator Josiah W. Bailey, North Carolina Democrat, interjected that the only way to balance the budget was to cut spending, because rev enue had reached “the point of di minishing returns.” Senator Schwellenbach (D.,Wash.) replied that the point of diminish- 1 ing returns was “the point where millionaires go out and incorporate their yachts to escape taxation” and Senator Barkley added that i■ those on relief had “long ago reach- ' ed the point of diminishing returns.” ( Bailey retorted that he believed irom the descriptions of the tax : evasions in Secretary Morgenthau’s letter that the treasury could have ’ collected the if it tried. ! “When a man incorporates his yacht he has evaded the law just * as when a political party sells books 1 to a corporation has evaded the cor- 1 nipt practices act,” Bailey said. 1 o Vicar Who Wed Wallis Resigns Announcement A Surprise; Says Recent Event Has No Bear ing On Resignation Darlington, England.— The Rev.
