F. D. R DESERTERS’
LASHED BY PEPPER
Florida Senator Criticizes Col
leagues For Assuming
Emergency Is Over
Washington, June 17.—(AP)—
Senator Claude Pepper, Florida
Democrat, took his colleagues to
task today for deserting their Presi
dent.
During debate on the administra
tion’s $1,500,000,000 relief bill Pep
per, a freshman in the senate, re
called President Roosevelt’s inau
gural address in January, calling for
further extension of the social fron
tiers, and said “a strange thing” had
happened. “Every time a bill to
extend the social frontier comes
before this body something happens
to it.”
Pepper said opponents of the re
lief program were “too enthusiastic”
in assuming the emergency was
over. Replying to charges that the
new deal program was degenerat
ing, he asserted that “if we continue
to degenerate during the next four
years as we have in the past four
years, our national income will soon
reach $89,000,000,000, or $90,000,000,-
000, the highest point in, history.”
Senator Josiah W. Bailey, North
Carolina Democrat, interjected that
the only way to balance the budget
was to cut spending, because rev
enue had reached “the point of di
minishing returns.”
Senator Schwellenbach (D.,Wash.)
replied that the point of diminish- 1
ing returns was “the point where
millionaires go out and incorporate
their yachts to escape taxation”
and Senator Barkley added that i■
those on relief had “long ago reach- '
ed the point of diminishing returns.” (
Bailey retorted that he believed
irom the descriptions of the tax :
evasions in Secretary Morgenthau’s
letter that the treasury could have ’
collected the if it tried. !
“When a man incorporates his
yacht he has evaded the law just *
as when a political party sells books 1
to a corporation has evaded the cor- 1
nipt practices act,” Bailey said. 1

WE DELIVER
RICHER FARM LIFE
TO BE STRESSED
Farm And Home Week Begins
At State College Aug* 2nd.
And Continues Through
August 6th.
Farm and Home Week at State
College, August 2-6, will focus at
tention on the theme, “Building a
richer farm life.”
The program will cover most of
the things that make agricultural
and rural life more fruitful and sa
tisfying, said John W. Goodman,
assistant director of the State Col
lege extension service.
“Since the farmstead is a cooper
ative enterprise in which both hus
band and wife share the responsibi
lities and benefits,” he continued,
“We are arranging a program that
will appeal to farm men and women.
“We are also desirous of having a
large number of husbands and wives
come and spend the entire week, as
everyday there will be something
worth while on the program.”
Rooms will be furnished free in
the college dormitories. Other rooms
close by will be available at a very
low ( price, Goodman added. Inex
pensive meals will be provided in
the college cafeteria, and no charge
will be made for the classes, demon
strations, and lectures. Rural mi
nisters of the state have been in
vited to meet with the farm people,
and to hold meetings of their own
during the week.
“We are particularly interested in
cooperating with ministers to help
the church reach more country peo
ple and to help them render a broad
er service in the rural community,”
Goodman stated.
The various agricultural organi
zations of the State have been in
vited to meet at the conference. The
Junior Orphanage at Lexington, will
send a 25 piece band.
Recreation, band music and other
entertainment will be offered to help
make the week “a real vacation as
well as an educational event,” Good
man pointed out.

QUESTIONS
ANSWERED
Question: How can I remove ob
jectionable flavors from milk?
Answer: There is no way to re
move these flavors, but proper feed
ing and management will prevent
them. Do not feed any highly flavor
ed feeds such as turnips or rye be
fore milking. These feeds, together
with roughage should be fed after
and not before or while milking. If
the milk has onion flavor the cows
should be taken off pasture and gi
ven dry feed at least six hours be
fore milking. If this is done and pro
per precautions taken in handling
the milk and cream the objection
able flavors will be eliminated.
