Santa Anita Is
Background For
Racing Thrills
Coming To Palace Theatre Thurs.
day and Friday, Jan. 6 and 7
Racing hoofs and beating hearts
mingle to provide dramatic thrills
in “Thoroughbreds Don’s Cry,” in
which Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer pre
sents Ronald Sinclair, new discovery
in English boy actors, teamed with
Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney and
Sophie Tucker. The new picture
lomes Thursday to the Palace Thea
tre.
The play is a drama of childhood
friendship and loyalty, based on
heart interest, but told against the
sensational background of the race
track, spectacular races and turf
intrigue. Alfred E. Green directed
from an original story by Eleanore
Griffin and J. Walter Ruben. Much
of the action was filmed at the San
ta Anita race track, with many fa
mous jockeys and horses and hun
dreds of people. Harry Raps pro
duced the picture.
Players include C. Aubrey Smith,
Forrester Harvey, Charles D Brown,
Frankie Darro, Henry Kolker and
Helen Troy.
The major thrill is the winning of.
a race by Ronald Sinclair, despite
an injured leg. One of the drama
tic highlights is Mickey Rooney’s
exposure of a band of race track
crooks in which he, as a young
jockey, faces ruin himself to save
his friend.
WOMEN AT HOME ARE
SHOWN TO SUFFER AS
MEN HANDLE “NITRO”
The task of women who merely
wait, while their men go on danger
ous errands, is far more difficult
than performing the errand itself,
according to “Danger Patrol,” new
RKO Radio film melodrama.
“Danger Patrol” tells a vivid story
of workers in the Texas oil fields,
the men who transport and handle
high explosives, thus living under
the constant shadow of death. The
[Blm contends, however, that dis-.
tficult as the task of these men is,
the nervous strain on their women
folk is doubly great.
Graphically, the picture shows
both the workers and the stay-at
homes, and emphasizes that though
the danger is great to those on as
signments, the ones left behind with
nothing but thleir imaginations to '
draw on, are in a much more diffi- 1
cult spot. 1
The tense situations are frequent
ly relieved by comedy, which, like
the theme of the story, is drawn
from the life of the people depict- i
ed.
Sally Eilers, John Beal and Harry
Carey head the cast and supporting
players include Solly Ward, Frank
M. Thomas, Jack Arnold, Ed Gar
gan and Lee Patrick.
The story is from an original by
Helen Freeland and Hilda Vincent,

NOVEL WORM CATCHER
Dr. Carl Omeron, left, of Lu

■ “vibro-helmontholator,” a worm
catching device he recently invent

worms come out attracted by the
vibrations.
CIDAR AND VINEGAR
GROWING IN VALUE
Ralaigh, Jan. 2 Vinegar and
cider, once considered by-products
of the apple industry, are now be
coming a profitable source of farm
income.
At present sweet cider is boom
ing in popularity for beverage pur
poses, declared Dr. Ivan Jones,
horticulturist physiolowist of the
State college experiment station.
Many farmers are in a position to
sell sweet cider, not as a by- pro
duct utilizing otherwise unsalable
fruit, but as a profitable outlet for
a portion of their sound frui*-.
This opportunity is offered those
who live in the vicinity of cold
storage plants. Sweet cider may
be frozen and stored for many
months with little or no deteriora
tion in juice quality, and when
thawed possesses the flavor of
freshly pressed juice, Dr. Jones de
clared.
The use of small kegs or jugs as
containers is preferable as this will
permit the thawing of the juice in
quantities which can be sold read
ily.
