Six States Represented In N. C. Public Health Course Object To Prepare Men For Work In Health Service Os Variow States By Wm. H. Richardson District Health Officer Chapel Hill—Six States are represented in the sixth class taking the public health course at the Uuiversity of North Caro lina since the establishment there of the Division of Public Health, of which the eminent Dr. Milton J. Rosenau is the Director. North Carolina leads in enroll ment, with 18, while Georgia, with 13, is second. Other States are represented as follows: Flori da. 4; South Carolina, 3; West Virginia, 3; and Virginia, 2. Os the North Carolina students enrolled, 6 are doctors taking the course prescribed for public health officers, one is an engi neer, 8 are sanitarians and 3 sani ,-frwy officers. All from Florida are taking courses prescribed for sanitarians and sanitary officers. Both en rollees from Virginia are in the non-medical group, while the South Carolina students consist of two taking training to become sanitary officers and one is a sanitary engineer. One doctor is registered from West Virginia, taking the course prescribed for health officers, while the other 2 from the State are in the non-medical group. From Georgia there are 7 doctors and 6 engineers. Able Faculty In Charge New members of the faculty this fall include Dr. Norton, formerly assistant director of preventive medicine for the State Board of Health, in Raleigh, who is professor of public health ad ministration, and Dr. A. J. Shel don, instructor in public health. Other faculty members in clude: Dr. Milton J. Rosenau, who is professor of epidemiology; Dr. H. G. Baity, professor of sanitary engineering; Dr. D. A. MacPherson, professor of bac teriology; Dr. Harold William Brown, professor of public heal th, who is teaching preventive medicine; Prof. H. B. Following this, a month with the field demonstration unit is required for North Carolina trainees, while the other States establish their own requirements for practical experience. “In brief”, explained Dr. Reyn olds, North Carolina State Health Officer, “It is the purpose of these courses to constantly raise the standards for and to increase ( the efficiency of those engaged in public health work. The mini-j mum requirement for entrance* into the school of public now is that the entrant shall have at least a high school di ploma and a course in chemistry and biology. Results Evident, Reynolds Says “A survey of health workers shows conclusively that the standards are bing raised stad ily and satisfactorily. In other words, we are determined that every public health worker shall be assigned.
