Baynes was delight ful hostess to members of the Tuesday bridge club this week at her home on High School drive. Bridge was played at three tables with club prize being aw arded to Mrs. Jack Strum and visitor’s award going to Mrs. Haywood Simpson. Mrs. Frank Howard won consolation prize for low score. The home was beautifully de- Misses Geraldine Spinks and Lucy Bowers spent the past week end in Fayetteville with friends. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Long, Mrs. Margaret Teague of this city, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. K. Richmond of South Boston spent Saturday in Raleigh attending the opera “Pa tience” at St. Mary’s school. Miss Anne Margaret Long was a mem ber of the cast. Mrs. Meade Hurlock has return ed to her home in Coatsville, Pa. after spending the winter here with her sister, Mrs. J. A. Long. Mrs. N. S. Thompson has re turned to her home here after an extended visit in Bartow, Fla. and Hendersonville, N. C. Little Miss Martha Crowell, her granddaugh ter, returned for a visit with Mrs. Thompson here. Misses Montague Entertain Circle Misses Maude and Mabel Mon tague were delightful hostesses Monday evening, March 13, when they entertained W. M. U. Circle No. 5 of the First Baptist Church at their home on South Maini Street. . . Chairman Mrs. E. D. Rowe pre sided over the meeting. Mrs. J. J. Woody gave the devotional and Miss Inda Collins led in pray er. The regular program, based this month on “Teaching” was discussed most interestingly by Mrs. J. J. Woody. Mrs. R. L. Wil-| burn, was present and in a very I capable manner, gave the second and third part of the mission study book, “Go Forward.” The program was closed with a pray er by Mrs. R. L. Wilburn. A business session followed. Personal service and assignments were made, visiting the hospital being the circle’s personal service for the month. A social hour was enjoyed dur ing which a delicious salad course ing which a delicious salad and coffee were served by the host esses. o- Johnson - Coley Engagement The announcement of the en gagement of Miss Katie Lee Johnson of Fuqifay Springs, a member of the Bethel Hill school faculty, and Henry N. Coley, Jr. of Roxboro is of particular inter est to their many friends in this locality. Miss Johnoson has been direct or public school music at Bethel Hill for the past two years while I Mr. Coley is the proprietor of j Henry’s store here. The following players made up tables: Mesdames Martin Michie, Landon Harvey, Elizabeth Cheek, Sam B. Winstead, R. H. Shelton, Tom Street, and Misses Helen Brown and Mamie Love Barnette. At the conclusion of play club prize was awarded to Mrs. Har vey and visitors prize to Mrs. Street. Delicious refreshments were served by the hotel staff.
