■ ■ B¥ EDWIN J. HAMLIN It was a grand opening out at Roxboro’s new golf course last weekend, There were no elaborate ceremonies to mark the event, no caddies of long experience to handle the clubs and find out-of-bounds balls, the grass grews long on two of the greens, but the inauguration of play on our home cour se was a grand event just the same to those of us who for years have longed for a course of “our own. Admittedly the course was not in the best of condition nor was such expected but not a whisper of grumbling could be heard by those who are used to the best of golfing facilities. Roxboro’s best golf ers thronged the new course Saturday and Sunday with the eagerness and pleasure of a child with a new toy. And we have a feeling that the plaything is one that will hold their pleasure for many, many years to come. Orchids to country club officials and every other person who has. been in any way responsible for the new Roxboro golf course, destined to become one of the towns biggest assets. 1 ******** Football drills at Person County high schools will proba bly get underway in ernest with the beginning of next week. Practice calls no doubt will be issued before school ends this week and Monday should find that extra fat virtually drip ping from thejperspiring candidates. Bethel Hill and Roxboro are both expected to have their usually fine outfits, the for mer under Coach W. T. Gibson, veteran of several years, the latter under George Wirtz, former Wake Forest captain and quarterback, who will be coaching in his first year. Complete schedules will be announced through these col umns as soon as they are ready for release. Whether Allens ville and Helena will sponsor football teams this year has not been formally announced although they are considered extremely doubtful. Both of these schools have made im portant advances in their athletic programs in the last few years and we wouldn’t be surprised to see football teams at both of these schools within the next year or two. | v * ******** Cincinnati’s surprising Reds continue to hold tenacious ly to that four-or-five game lead over St. Louis’s fighting Redbirds. The Cards since their sensational winning streak, 19 wins in 21 games, several weeks ago have been able to hold their own but as for registering anything like a sub stantial gain over the Reds, they jjust haven’t had what it takes. Observers and so-called baseball experts, of which this writer does not claim even a passing acquaintance, point •eri to the Labor Day series between the two teams as the crucial one in the final drive toward the pennant. If St. Louis could have swept this series, they would have been given a strong boost toard the leadership. However, with the second game of the holiday doubleheader tied and losing the playoff game the following day left the Birds a full five games be hind and Cincinnati with renewed hope and confidence stronger than ever before. It will take exceptional baseball to pull the Cards up to the league leaders at this point in the race, that exceptional baseball meaning a horrible slump for the Reds, another sensational winning streak for the Cards. Right now it looks like our boy Enos and his mates will have to be content with second place, which in itself means a siz abie piece of cash for all hands concerned. Clayton’s Store Chub Lake Game Ends In Uproar Clayton’s Store was awarded a 9-6 game over their old rivals, Chub Lake, Saturday afternoon when their scheduled game ended in protest over an umpire’s de cision. The game was finally stopped in the first half of the eighth inn ing when Chub Lake players and spectators swarmed over the field after a thrown ball had been blocked by O. Clayton who was trying to score from third base. When umpires were unable to control the situation, the game was called in favor of Clayton’s Store. Chub Lake had also refus ed to continue the game after a heated argument which ensued before the umpires could rule on the play. Heated rivalry has existed be tween the two teams for some time. Manager Jule Warren of the Clayton’s team termed the game one of the most exciting this year. J. Carr’s four hits in four trips to the plate took hitting honors for the day. Heavy workouts are the order of the day for Roxboro High’s Rambler hopefuls, as Coach Geor ge Wirtz ordered the first scrim mage of the pre-season training period for this afternoon. Approximately 30 candidates were on hand for yesterday’s drills and indications point to a line averaging around 175 pounds with the backfield of about 160 pounds. Light workouts and plenty of calisthenics have been the menu since Monday when uniforms were issued by Coach Wirtz. The squad appears to be rapidly rounding into shape although much of the material appears to be on the green order. Coach Wirtz, in his first year of high school coaching, has a nucleus of 11 veterans around which to build his 1939 Ramblers. Led by co-captain Hassell Whit field, powerful tackle, and Wal lace Moore, center and kicker, the holdovers from last year’s stellar outfit include, Charles White, Junior Cushwa, Louis “Red” Day and Henry Newell, backs; Lawrence Holeman and Buddy Clayton, ends; Fred Woods and Herbert Allen and Lindsey Wagstaff, tackles and Sam Um stead, guard. The first casualty of the early drills occurred yesterday when Malcolm Guill, promising reserve, fainted during the heavy drills. 7, Chub Lake 5. Two-base hits: Clayton’s Store 4, Chub Lake 1.
