Miss Gaiselle Kerner of Wash ington, D. C. were the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Street over the past weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Willson and small daughter, Betsy, spent Thursday in Durham. Mrs. Margaret Teague has as her guest for a few days Miss Bessie Thompson of Leasburg. Miss Sue Bradsher, who has been sick for the past few days, is much better. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gibson of High Point, N. C. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Street. Mrs. Margaret Teague and Mrs. J. A. Long, Sr. spent Thursday af ternoon in Durham. Mesdames J. C. Irvin, M. L. Sturgis and Miss Marie Cotten head of Portsmouth, Va. spent the weekend in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Street. I o The yield per acre of cotton in Lenoir County will be larger than last year, but there has been a reduction in the number of acres grown this year. Case Sanitation Scores For Past Month Are Given Highest score in the September report of case inspection by Sani tarian T. J. Fowler, of the district health department, goes to the Roxboro Diner, with a score of 95. Two othgr establishments, Hotel Rcxboro and Royal case, received no rating for the past month mecause their service de partments are undergoing exten sive renovations at the present time. For the same reason there is no report from King’s Palace. In addition to the Roxboro Diner, four other cases, the Feedwell, Knoll Inn, Peoples, and Brown Bobby received respective scores of over 90. Highest of the four was the Feedwell, with 93, fol lowed by Peoples case and Brown Bobby at 91 each and Knoll Inn at 90.5. Highest in the ■ eighties was Circle case, 88; Blue Bird was 85, with O’Briant’s, at 80. Red Lane case, at 79 and Munday’s lunch, at 75, concluded the list. According to the schedule of the health department a grade of 90 to 100 accords an A rating; 80 to 90 is grade B and 70 to 80, grade C. All cases rating below 70 are required to suspend operations. o—“ FEEDER CATTLE Many Cumberland County far mers, after attending a meeting to discuss buying and feeding beef cattle, expressed a desire to buy and feed out some of these cattle this winter. o SULPHUR HELPS Experiments conducted in Northhampton county this year showed that peanuts dusted with sulphur are retaining a large per centage of their leaves than un dusted plants. Officers Elected For Curernt Term At Club Meeting The Woman’s Club met in reg ular session on Monday after noon, at the Community House. This was the first meeting of the 1939-1940 year. After the business meeting it was announced that the Woman’s club will sponsor a Halloween Party at Winstead Warehouse on October 31. Bingo and other games will be enjoyed. Members were urged to keep this date in mind and watch foi> further announcements. With Mrs. R. H. Shelton pre- r siding, the new officers were in stalled. Mrs. Shelton spoke to each officer in regard to duties for the new year and presented a small symbol of office to each one. Mrs. R. C. Hall, as president, was presented a miniature ga vel; Mrs. Robah Baynes, vice president, a helmet; to Mrs. W. E. Malone, secretary, a quill; Mrs. C. B. Kirby, as treasurer, a gold dollar sign. Mrs. T. T. Mitchell, of the Ways and Means Committee, was presented a small bank, and Mrs. S. B. Win stead of the Music Committee, a harp. Mrs. Ralph Tucker, Mem bership Committee, received a taper in holder and Mrs. R. A. Whitfield, Publicity Chairman, a scrap book. In acepting the ofice of Pre sident, Mrs. Hall landed the work of her predecessors, and expressed a wish that the club might go forward. She named the following com mittees for the year: Ways and Means, Mrs. R. M. Spencer, Mrs. T. T Mitchell, Mrs. C. B. Kirby, and Mrs B. B. Strum. Membership, Mrs. Robah Bay nes, Mrs. J. H. Lanning and Mrs. Henry Gates. Music Committee, Mrs Edgar Masten and Mrs. S. B. Winstead. Library, Mrs. A. S. deVlam ing, Miss Virginia Brandon and Mrs. R. H. Shelton. Program, Mrs. S. G. Winstead, Mrs. Ralph Tucker and Mrs. B. B. Strum. Literature, Mrs. R. G. Cole. Publicity, Mrs. R. A. Whitfield. Mrs. R. H. Shelton gave a re sume of the Welfare work that the club did last year and Mrs. R. A. Whitfield gave a short talk on the District meeting held in Carey. At the close of the program tea and wafers were served by the hostess of the afternoon, Mrs. T. T. Mitchell, Mrs. Ralph Tucker and Mrs. R. A. Whitfield. o Demonstration Club Schedule For Coming Week i Home Demonstration . club meetings will be held this week on: Wednesday, Oct. 11 when Bushy Fork club meets with Mrs. Katie Bradsher at 3;00 p. m. On Thursday, Oct. 12, when Cunningham club meets in the club room of the Jno. C. Terrell school at 2:00 p. m. and on Friday, October 13, when Mt. Tir zah club meets with Mrs. D. M. Cash at 2:00 p. m. The hat, military fashion, is held with a chin strap. “Home-Eckers” Os High School Meet In Home-Ec Room The “Home Eckers club” held theis regular meeting in the Home Economics department at Rox boro High school last week. The meeting was called to or der by the adult advisor, Mrs. Rabon, who acted as chairman until the officers for the year were elected and installed. The oficers who were elected are as follows: Annie Laurie Day, president; Catherine Hester, vice president; Katherine Gilliland, secretary; Edith Walker, treas urer; and Maude Chambers, re porter. The club is composed of 28 members all of whom are taking or have taken Home Economics. L. Al len, assistant health department official, was: syphilis 11, tuber culosis 3, chicken pox 3, with one case each of scarlet fever, septic sore throat and diphtheria. In tuberculosis control Dr. Al len reports 27 tuberculin tests and 37 patients fluoroscoped, while in maternity care, 18 mo thers received examinations and 9 received contraceptive advice. In the treatment and prevention cf syphilis, 14 new cases were admitted, 101 blood tests were given and total treatments num bered 550. Schick tests in the number of 51 were made and 32 immuni zations for smallpox were given while diphtheria anti-toxins were administered 22 times. In school work inspections for skin and scalp diseases were given 4,236 times, while 922 similar inspec tions were made in Orange coun ty. Class-room health talks were made 45 times.
