if/75w iftr A. iv li «: .JB T "’” l\v o_o— 0 0 Sporting Doldrums The awkward age of the sports season is with us now sure enough. Out in Cincinnati they have been talking base bail, and giving our neighbor’s Mr. Bramham a boost in sal ary for his work as boss of Minor leagues in the game. And heie at home, in Person county, a group of baseball minded boys have been staging a “Hillbilly” musical show as a bene fit performance in order to make money so that they (the boys) can buy bats and balls and suits to start the oncoming season in good style. , , „ Football, except for chatter about the Rose Bowl and all the little bowls, is out of conversation now. Instead, local folk centers on hunting luck and on the sporting values of this or that dog. In Roxboro there was a re-consecration to football on Thursday night when Dr. and Mrs. Merritt, ac cording to long-standing custom, acted as host and hostess to the Bethel Hill gridironers, but that dinner was just a flareup, along side last month’s bootball frenzy. The notes just written are random observations. Why not look at a daily sports page to see if the in-be-tween season fairs any better there? o—o— 0 0 Here’s The Page t First, there is a story of a Friday afternoon post-season contest between Littleton and Warrenton. Our Ramblers know both these teams, and so we pass on. In another cor ner is a black-faced story (type and printer’s ink) about Har ry Dunkle, the Carolina man who was injured in the Caro lina-Virginia Thanksgiving day fraccas. Harry lives in Lock Haven, wherever that is, and is reported to be, as they say, “Getting along nicely.” A small item at the bottom of the page relates the result of a basketball game between the Goldsboro “All Stars” and a Williamston team. Another story, a little longer, deals with the Cary softball team, and here is something— “Roxboro’s Bob Whitten” The rest of the line, in a story concerned with the past history of the Freshman team at Carolina, says Whitten is “the finest pivot candidate”. In Smith Barrier’s opinion, Rox boro’s “Bob” is the only “pivot man of importance”, and then he recites what some of the home folks know, that Whitten “has played practically all the time (at Carolina) at center, although he was a backfield man while in high school at Rox boro”. And getting personal, Barrier says, “He weighs 202”. o—o 0 0 And Now For Another Stop At Home . . Last week, so reports went, Enos Slaughter came back to town and said that he and Manager Branch Rickey had let a little thing like a salary difference of SSOO stand between them and a springtime agreement. However, as given out in the papers, Slaughter has declared that he will not be a hold out. If he has to be a holdout it is to be hoped that like Wesley and Rick Farrell, he has enough cold cash salted away to last til ground-hog day. When a man knows he is good, and may be Enos should feel that way about himself, he can’t be blam ed if he does want all he can get, while the getting is good. Garbo A Real Trouper, Says Leading Man “The first impression I got of Garbo was that, to a greater de gree than many other actresses, she is thoroughly workmanlike.” So declares one of the four ac tors who have played opposite her more than once, Melvyn Douglas, who plays her lover in her first modem, gay, sophisticat ed romantic comedy, “Ninotchka,” coming to the Palace theatre tomorrow and Tuesday. Douglas first received this impression when he played opposite Garbo in “As You Desire Me.” Garbo, through the eyes of her leading man, is a creature of charm and thoroughness. “She is very charming and very gracious,” he said. “Os course, all actresses who play romantic roles have charm. H. Merritt, of Bethel Hill, gave their annual banquet for the members of the Bethel Hill high school football squad Thursday night at the Ho tel Roxboro. Dinner was served at 7:30 o’clock and chief speak er was Dr. Merritt’s brother, the Hon. W. D. Merritt, prominent Roxboro attorney. Mr. Merritt, who is dean of the local bar and an alumnus of the University of North Carolina, was an active participant in foot ball during his student days and his talk was devoted to remin iscences of football as he knew it then and as he knows it today. He also paid tribute to the honor guests of the evening. Members of the football team presented a gift to Dr. and Mrs. Merritt and before the address by Mr. Merritt was delivered, the chairman called upon Mrs. Merritt, who spoke a few words of welcome to the guests and praised them for their good teamwork exhibited during the past year. o BASKETBALL AT GYM The Roxboro Ramblers will engage the Allensville high team in the local gymnasium Wednes day afternoon. This is to be a practice game. equipment. But Garbo’s charm is different. I can honestly say that the whole setup of ‘Ninotch ka’ with Garbo and with Ernst Lubitsch directing was one of my happiest experiences. Only too often pictures are a darned bore. The material is sometimes uninter esting and hence any interest is in the personalities. But in “Ni ne tchka” the. material was as in teresting as the personalities.” DOLLY MADISON THEATRE Monday - Tuesday, Dec. 11-12 j lijuoßll jufli it* Hiioi.>sg>i l Igf Wy., HUM - : ■ 1 y mßi ..fypnA; \ DOROTHY MZhvk LOVEn 1..1 ROBERT tgjsgjk BALDWIN First of tmnftt ture stria fr»m rko radio 01r«ct*d by ttINAID VOftHAUS.
