An Atom is one of the smallest possible divisions of any material. In fact it is so small that you cannot see it with your eyes. Vou cannot see It through a microscope. This model is enlarged more than twenty billion times. It Is explained through a hidden voice and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Fair from throughout the United States as well as many from foreian lands. • points out that oats, wheat, rye, and barley usually make better yields in the Coastal Plains than on comparable soils in the Pied mont and Mountain sections. The mattress- making pamph let is expected to be of value in the project for low income fami lies which the Extension Service is directing in every county in the State, in cooperation with other agricultural and welfare agencies. o CORK The Amur cork tree—introduc ed from Asia as an ornamental— has proven satisfactory for will lculture to prevent erosion in country. C. Pine Needle Mulch Aids Reforestation Mulching with pine needles, or pine straw, to preserve moisture and hold the soil is familiar in many parts of North Carolina, but this practice will serve ano ther purpose, says W. D. Lee, Extension soil conservationist of N. C. State College. A pine needle mulch will sti mulate reforestation of eroded and denuded areas, he stated. This has been proven conclusive ly in tests, and scores of farmers have reported a growth of pine trees in areas where they have covered ditch banks or idle fields with pine straw. Lee said that the Southern Piedmont Soil Conservation Ex- I periment Station at Athens, Ga„ conducted these tests to demon strate this method of reforesting old fields or clay gall areas. “Seeking an economical way 1 of seeding eroded areas, the station mulched four clay-galled plots with 800 pounds of pine needle litter from adjacent woods. In five months, a healthy mixed vegetation developed, in cluding more than 1,600 short- DOLLY MADISON TP |? Monday - Tuesday, July 29-30th. In conclusion, he suggested that North Carolina farmers try this method of controlling eroJ sion , one Os the major agricul tural problems of the State. o Director Simon An Authority On “Stage Freight S. Sylvan Simon, who directed “Sporting Blood”, story of south ern horse racing showing at the Dolly Madison theatre starting to morrow, confessed to his cast dur ing the production of the picture that when he had his one oppor tunity to appear before the cam era he suffered such stage freight that he couldn’t go through with it. It was during the first day of production on “Sporting Blood” when both Robert Young and Maureen O’Sullivan were saying that the first scene of a new pic ture always scared them silly but that once it was over they felt perfectly all right. “I have to be sympathetic with all nervous actors because of what happened to me,” admitted Si mon. “I once wrote a short sub ject showing how films are made. I was to direct it and also play the role of the test director in the picture. When the time came for me to step in front of the cam - era I simply couldn’t do it. I got cold feet and had to hire an actor to take my place.” o ADVERTISE IN THE TIMES FOR RESULTS.
