Ben Hecht Does
Job - - And How!
Ben Hecht, the man who once
rated actors several notches low
er than writers (he is quite fa
mous as a writer), has turned
actor himself. And Hecht consid
ers himself an admirable choice
for the part, that pf a bum accus
ed of aiding and abetting the
world’s oldest, if least honorable,
profession.
If you look fast, you can see
the brilliant writer-director-pro
ducer of “Angels Over
Columbia picture showing at tne
Dolly Madison theatre today.
Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., stars in
ihe film for which he acted as
co-producer. In addition to writ
ing the tenderly human drama of
romance and heartbreak, in ad
dition to directing Fairbanks, Jr.,
Rita Hayworth, Thomas Mitchell,
John Qualen and several hundred
ether actors in addition to super
vising all the many details of a
picture in production, Hecht edit
ed the film, had a hand in com
posing its musical score, and gen
erally too kover every other task
he could . . . including that brief
role in a night court.
Sales Still Good At
South Boston
South Boston, Va. Though
many predict that tobacco sales
will be completed by Thanks
giving sales on the South Boston
market continue to be heavy.
Prices on all grades are holding
firm, with all cigarette types ea
gerly bought in at the highest ma
rket price.
Growers selling in South Bos
ton are in an optimistic mood,
and are taking advantage of the
excellent shopping facilities af
forded at the tobacco capital of
the world. Stores have stocked
heavily for the fall trade and all
report a brisk business. This au
gurs well for a prosperous 1940
for Southside Virginia and near
by North Carolina.
Considering the great appro
priation for defense and the sub
sequent increase in employment,
merchandise cost is holding at a
low level, far different from con
ditions which existed during the
days of the World War. For this
reason shoppers are taking adv
antage of high class mechandise
at reasonable prices and stocking
up plentifully for the winter.

CONTROL OF COVERED
SMUT OF WHEAT:
The use of copper carbonate
dust for control of covered smut
of wheat has come into extensive
use in the United States. It is very
simple and easy to apply.
In applying copper carbonate
dust to seed wheat it is neces
sary that the dust be thoroughly
mixed with the grain. Two oun
ces of copper carbonate are used
with each bushel of seed wheat
Heated. The mixing should be
done in a closed container which
can be rotated, such as a revolv-|
ing barrel. Itl is essential that'
each kernel be covered with a
fine coating of dust. Only copper
carbonate manufactured especial
ly for seed treatment purposes
should be used.
There are also on the market
good commercial preparations for
treating seed wheat for smut.
Ask your seed cfcaler or your
druggist.
CONTROL OF PEACH
TREE BORERS:
The office of the County Agent
will be glad to give instructions
to anyone who wishes to treat
peach trees for control of borers.
The treatment may be applied in
the South at any convenient time
duDng the fall, winter or spring.
Best results, however, will, prob
ably be obtained in the fall, at
the end of the egg-laying period
of the moths, when most of the
borers are small.
