Dried Beef Both f e„t Pkg. Cream Cheese For -1 Beef Cattle Need Protein Addition Sam L. Williams, assistant ! animal husbandman of N. C, State College, has an answer to the question: “Can beef be pro duced without a protein supppie nient?” This is what he has been tell ing breeders and feeders who have asked the question in re cent weeks: “In my opinion it can be done, but it is neithcr| practical nor profitable.” Then he goes on to explain! tjhat the important thing! to the cattle producer is ho .v i much weight and finish he can put on his cattle and how long! it will require. Efficient produo-j thin is essential to greatest profit in any business, and this is es pecially true in the cattle busi ness. Some of the more common I protein supplements are: cotton-! seed meal, soybean meal, lin seed meal, and com gluten meal. All of these are about equal in feeding value. Williams explained that the economy of feeding a protein supplement lies in the fact that] such feeds are responsible for more efficient utilization cf feed, larger gains, higher finish, and a greater selling price. Numerous experiment stations have shown that a protein sup plement in fattening and breeding catle rations will save on both corn and silage. Then, to, it has the added advantage of produc ing a superior quality of beef. As to the amount of this ma terial to feed, the State College specialist said that ordinarily in winter rations for beef cattle from one to two pounds of a protein supplement is satisfac tory if a fair quality of roughage j is fed. o- Domestic supply and demand conditions are favorable for the marketing of the 1941 domestic wool clip, reports the U.
