Dudley Must Be Good
People from this section who saw Bill Dudley of
Virginia in action Thursday say that he is plenty good.
They even go so far as to say that he is better than good.
Coach Wolf of Carolina said:
“Dudley is one of the finest players I’ve seen this
year. He can do everything a good back is supposed to
do. The entire Virginia team played a great ball game
and deserved to win.”
People are comparing Dudley with Lach of Duke.
Some say the Virginia boy is better. Others claim that
Lach has the edge. Anyway you take it, both are great
ball players and fans around here regret that the two
players are winding up teir college careers.

Bowl Time Here
This column is being written Friday and so we do
not know what is going to happen in the State-Duke bat
tle tomorrow, but whether Duke wins or loses, we think
that the team will get a bowl bid of some kind. She may
or may not accept, but bowl bids have to be issued and
someone must accept.
Prominent bowls are—Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, Or
ange Bowl and Cotton Bowl.
Announcements of invitations may be expected at
any time. As a matter of fact tonight's radio will prob
ably have news of one kind or the other.
Stephen Dickens, Jr., of Fort

hloooy s/ovEs, 7^c^ue:
Woody Jones, State tackle from Roxboro, is winding up a great football career. His
final game against Duke proved his true worth.
Who’s The Best Halfback,
Bill Dudley Or Steve Lach?
Raleigh, Nov. 22.—North Car- 1
olina and Virginia are in one of
their traditional bitter arguments,
this time over the relative merits
of one Wild Bill Dudley and one
Steven John Lach.
Captain Dudley, say followers
of the University of Virginia, is
the best football player in the
country, and proves it by leading
the nation in scoring, yards gain
ed passing and running, and his
all-around field marshalling. He 1
has accounted for 134 points, 968
yards rushing and 856 yards pass
ing this Fall.
Lach, say followers of Duke’s
unbeaten football team, is the 1
best football player in the coun- 1
try and the best player Wallace,
Wade ever produced, and proves
it by providing the spark which
has turned the Duke team into a
powerful aggregation that ranks
among the nation’s best.
It is about as difficult to com
pare Lach with Dudley as to com
pare Joe DiMaggio with Joe
Louis, but the argument contin
ues, nevertheless. Lach runs from
the wingback position while Dud
ley runs from the tailback posi
tion.
About the only time Lach ever
runs with the ball is on a reverse,
and he’s averaged an unbeliev
able 10 yards every time on that
difficult play. He’s passed only
twice this season, and both pass
es were completed. Lach catches
passes; Dudley throws them.
Defense, of course, is Lach’s
main dish. The blond back from
Altoona, Pa., is without a doubt
the best defensive back in the
country and the best Coach Wade
has ever seen.
Lach, who plays defense left
halfback, is all over the field on
each play, diagnosing the opposi
tion’s attack. Consequently he
makes 75 per cent—or more—of
the Duke tackles. When a player
is spilled for a loss, Lach usual
ly is repsonsible.
Against North Carolina—Vir
ginia’s toughest toe of the season
--Dudley as usual was unstop
pable when he was running or
passing, accounting for three
touchdowns and four extra points
and passing for the fourth touch-,
down as Virginia won, 28—7. De
fensively he wad only fair. A- !
gainst the same team, Lach al
most single-handedly stopped the
Carolina running and passing at
tack, and managed to provide the
spark for the victory.
' Both Lach and Dudley are great
kickers. Dudley kicks off, punts, l
and makes the conversions—rare-1
!y missing. Lach usually leaves
the punting to a tailback, but he’s j
the best punter on the Duk» team!
and bis coffin-corner kicking a- 1
gainrt Carolina set up all three
Duke touchdowns. His great
blocking paved the way for the j
scoring. One came on one cf his
reverses.
The argument has reached the

against N. C. State tomorrow
may settle it once and fgr all. As
matters now stand, both sides say
Dudley probably is the best de

Lach the best defensive back.
