From a mess hall’s ice chest to the oxygen tanks at the Station Hospital, ice is supplied by Camp Butner’s own ice plant under the supervision of Mr. Carl H. Cofer, a civilian. "Our most dslicate job,” states Cofer, "is to maintain the 114 1-2 horse power motor and equip ment with the various magnetic and electric controls.” Beginning with the crystal clear water which comrs direct ly from Camp Butner’s supply lines, four 300 pound cans are filled from the automatic can filler at one time. These con tainers are ten raised from the j can filler by an electric hoist and j transmitted by an overhead | track to their respective section; and submerged in a 15 degree ( brine. There they remain for thirty hours. "During the time cf freezing”, says the supervisor, "filtered air with two pounds of pressure is blown into the containers to as sure the purest ice through the! agitation of the water.” After the ice is frozen solid, ] the electric hoist is used again! to raise the containers four at a time and carry them to the thawing dip tank, which the blocks of ice are loosened. Then they are placed in the ice dump which in turn is tripped by a foot pedal allowing the four cry stal clear blocks to slide downi the ice chute into the storage | room. This storage room, inci-; dentally, has on hand at all times approximately 40 tons of ice. Issuing the ice throughout the day, seven days a (week, falls to Private First Class Anthony Benedetti of the Supply Detach ment, Supply Division number one. , The various temperatures of] brine, storage room, outside air, and operations pressures are kept at the plant' on an hourly log. If an operator has made a change or adjustment, it must be recorded on the log. CAMP BUTNER, Feb. .25.
