IN VETERAN UNIT
Tar Heel Wins Honor At
American. Legion Na
tional Convention.
OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 25. —The
American Legion this week en
dorsed United States participa
tion in a postwar association of
nations to maintain peace but it
specified that the interests of the
United States should come first.
The endors'ement was in the
form of a resolution adopted at
the closing session of the 25th
annual convention at which
Warren H. Atherton, of Stockton,
Calif., was elected national com
mandert succeed Roane War

Chaplain: Father John F. Me-,

The choice of the next con
vention city will be made by the
national executive committee.
The resolution appoving par
ticipation in world affairs in--
cluded the statement “our own
national interest must ever be
our first concern,” and avoided
specific suggestions on how to
maintain the peace. “It would be
premature now to state [with
particularity how the peace shall
be implemented and enforced,”
it said.
It demanded that aggressor
nations be disarmed forever and
“made impotent to provoke an
other world Conflict,” and that
no peace be made except on the
basis of. unconditional surrender.
Atherton has served as nation
al defense chairman of the Le

later he was promoted to cap

serve for 16 years.
The new commander, the fath
er of four children, was a Char
ter member of the American
Legion po.t at Stockton. His rise
to national commander was pre
ceded by service as executive
committeemen, post commander,
district commander, department
commander and in several of
fices in the national organization.
The Legion adopted other res
olutions, prepared by the for
eign relations committee, which
reaffirmed the Legion’s “faith in
the foreign policy” of the gov
ernment; endorsed the good
neighbor policy; pledged that
ctiizens of conquered nations
will be liberated, and demanded
that the nazi, fascist and Japan
ese leaders be brought to “stern
and unrelenting justice.”
Adm. Ernest J. King, com
mander in chief of the United
States fleet, told the Legion dele
gates that the recent task force
blows at Marcus island and the
Gilberts predicted the “shape of
things to come” and he warned
Japan to expect new naval and
air attacks.

QUARTERMASTER
HAS HUGE JOB
IN ARMY CAMP
Warehouses Have Every
thing From Socks To
Chinaware.
CAM PBUTNER, Sept. 30
“Size 10 1-2, sir, here they are,”
or “Three skirts, WAC, summer,
•ize 12, ma’am,” or “Two mops,
three brooms, one GI can, ser
geant.” Clerks in a department
store? No, clerks in the Quarter
master warehouses at Camp But
ner, are quoted here. And the
warehouses, fifteen in number,
contain everything from clothing
to pup tents, from china to field
ranges. Under the supervision of
Col. Francis H. Kuhn, director of
the supply and service division
at Camp Butner, these ware
houses are responsible for sup
plying individual clotihing and
mes ; hall, barracks and office
equipment to ail the units on the
post.
With a constant stock valued
at approximately $9,000,000, the
Quartermaster warehouses at
Camp Butner compare with the
large department stores through
out the country. Twenty-five
military employees, including
eleven members of Camp But
ner’s WAC detachment, and ap
proximately 75 civilian employ
ees comprise the “sales,” clerical,
and receiving and shipping force.
Covering literally blocks of
| ground, the warehouses are ar
-1 ranged to make possible the
greatest efficiency in rtoring and
handling property. Everything
has its assigned place and no
time need ever bo lost in trying
|to locate merchandise. Cartons
land cases arc lined up with the
[precision of soldiers in forma
tion, and rigidly enforced fire
regulations dictate the area left
free at the walls and between
rows. Two supervisory inspec
tion tours daily insure that all
regulations are complied with
and that complete cleaniness in
- and about the warehouses pre
vails.

supply officers for the units on
the post. A visual inventory card
system mikes it possible to tell
at a glance when the stock on
hand of any item is running low.
This is promptly replenished by
requisition on the army depot
at Charlotte, insuring that ade
quate supplies of all properties
will be available constantly.
Established to function as the
distribution center for all units,
the Quartermaster warehouses
are geared to a rapid turnover.
As in all other army branches,
efficiency and speed are the
watchwords. And to these might
be added the time-honored slo
gan, “If you don’f soe it, ask for
it,” because whatever is needed
in the way of clothing and in
dividual equipment and supplies
can be found there.
