It is very lonesome at one or two o’clock in the morning darkness. with shells sailing over your head and you lying in a wet fox-hole.” Asked how he got out of “tight places”, Sgt. Gentry put it this way, “Well, you see, I was in a tight place all the time. I stayed out for as many as twen ty-one days without changing my clothes; and the beard on my face iwas so long I had to take scissors to clip it before I could shave.” Thefre were, however, rest camps away from front lines. “Compared with the Japs”, says Sgt. Gentry, “we have su perior equipment and our boys are far superior in courage. The Japs have a few tricks, but we are getting wise to them, and with good officers to lead them, our boys are doing a good job. And it is a pleasure to say that ground forces are proud of the Air Forces supporting them in attacks”. There are some fighters who do not wear uniforms. They are the natives, the ones who wear grass skirts and put their hair in pom padours, and think nothing of putting great packs on their backs and crawling up steep slopes that are slick with mud. "These natives”. Gentry adds, are friendly to Americans, and a great help, carrying supplies over trails where every vine covered tree may conceal a Jap sniper. The natives just dig their long toes into the mud and go right on. pack and all. In no other way could we have gotten our sup plies in in tough spots.” “But. until the Americans came,” according to Gentry, “matches were unknown to the natives, and although they live in rain-proofed, thatched huts, they do not know what a nail is for. They live in the jungles, where they secure their food. They eat the fruits that grow there and sometimes catch fish from the waters, or, again, they may run down one of the many wild hogs that roam the land; when they cook they use hot coals and their hog-meat tastes much like our barbecue.” "The most welcomed thing from home at Guadalcanal is mail, and I want the people here to know it,” says Gentry, who j also thinks the job the American Red Cross is doing measures up to all the words of praise that he can command. “I will never forget how, once, when I was in the front lines, the Red Cross, with the gift of a package con taining cigarettes, candy and other things, made me realize that the folks back home had not forgotten us.” “And getting Roxboro papers— The Times, and the Courier was good, too. They helped me to know about things at home, when any news from home was really appreciated.” ‘The worst thing of all ‘over there’ was seeing my buddies die in those jungles and on bat tle fields”, is the way Gentry ends his story, “and the hardest thing (for me) was to leave the rest of my buddies over there — so keep on fighting those Japs!” PLANNING BOARD NAMED IN STATE; MEET ON OCT. 8 (continued from front page) appoint any replacemests.
