BY MRS. D. T. ROUGHTON Miss Mary Edna Byrd after a ten days’ vacation spent with rel atives at Spruce Pine, has re turned to her duties as church secretary at Old Fort Baptist church. o Mrs. E. B. Moore and Carl Brad ley have returned to their homes at St. Louis, after a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brad ley at Old Fort. Mrs. Latta Whisnant and child ren of Asheville were visitors of the Fred Bradleys. o Mrs. Dan West has returned to her home at Columbia, N. C., after a weeks’ visit at the home of her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Burgin at Old Fort. Mrs. Maurice Fleming and sons, Michael and Charles, left for their home in Baltimore after a weeks’ visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Avery Fleming, at Old Fort. o The Woman’s Society of Christ ian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild served supper on Sunday evening at six-thirty on the church la wn . Fifty invitations were issued to the young people of the community. Following the supper a devotional was conducted by members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. o Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Tate of New Orleans have arrived to spend ten days at the home of Mr. Tate’s mother, Mrs. A. C. Tate in Old Fort. Mrs. Tate also has as guests her son and daughter-in law, Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Tate and their children, Jane and Albert of Hartfort, Conn., who will spend the month of August in Old Fort. Mrs. Anne Foster Steppe has been added to the personnel of the Old Fort Telephone exchange. The office has been in charge of Miss Daisy McDaniel for the past five years. o The Rev. Thos. B. Ruff and Mrs. Ruff of Elmwood, who have been attending conferences at Montreat for the past week, are visiting the home of Mrs. W. P. Artz in Old Fort this week. o Miss Marceau returned to New York last week after a visit of two weeks at the home of her mother, Mrs. Bell Marceau at Old Fort. o Mrs. Homer Mason of Sarasota, Fla., is spending several weeks visiting her sisters and brother in-law, Miss Gertrude Dula and Mr. and Mrs. H. Miss Elizabeth Wells, super visor of schools for Johnson county, has returned to her home at Smithfield after spending the month of July at the summer home of Mrs. George B. Strick land at Old Fort. o Mr. and Mrs. John Harper of Greenville, S. C., have returned to their temporary home at Old Fort. Mr. Harper who is in charge of construction of Clearwater plant at Old Fort, is also a peach grow er with orchards in Greenville county. The Harpers occupy an apartment at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Mauney in Old Fort. o Mrs. Henry A. Westerman en tertained at her home in Old Fort on Sunday with a dinner in cele bration of her husband’s birthday. Guests for the occasion who were members of the immediate Dula and Westerman families, were Mr. and Mrs. John McAllis ter of Spartanburg, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Long of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hawkins and son, Dula Hawkins of Marion, Mrs. Eugenia Goodson of Asheville,; Mrs. Clara Mason of Sarasota, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gibson and son, Tom Gibson of Marion; Miss Gertrude Dula and W. H. Westerman of Old Fort. A large birthday cake surround ed by candles centered the din ing table. o Mrs. Charles T. Steppe of Old Fort will leave this week for John son county where she will be a member of the faculty of one of Johnson oounity’s large consoli dated schools. Mrs. Arwynn Step pe Magstaff will accompany her mother and be employed as teach er in the same county. o Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle Nesbit and children who have been visit ing Mr. Nesbit’s mother, Mrs. J. N. Nesbit at Old Fort, left Sun day for their home at Newport News, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Nesbit left Old Fort on Monday for their home at Houston, Texas, after spending the past week with their mother, Mrs. J. N. Nesbit here. Mr. Nesbit is an employee of the Southern Pacific railroad. Charles Turner arrived in Old Fort on Monday for a week’s visit with relatives. His wife am d daughter who have spent the past three weeks here, will accompany him home. o Mr. and Mrs. W. Clyde Miller, Jr., and children, Laßue and Clyde Roxy Theatre Will Show Belated Show o “The Postman Always Rings Twice”, will be shown at the Roxy Theatre in Old Fort, Sunday and Monday August 17-18. This show was scheduled to show at the grand opening of the Theatre on June 18. Mr. Macon stated that owing to a tie-up at that time it was im possible to get the film. The management has spared no expence in making the new Roxy Theatre one of the best in West ern North Carolina. Tourists and visitors have com plimented Mr. Macon on having such a beautiful theatre. Just re cently the Black Mountain News received a nice letter expressing complimentary remarks concern ing the theatre. The candy bar, in the lobby is one of the most complete Bars in western North Carolina. Only the best of candy bars are sold. Woodmen Circle Has Picnic At Old Fort o Woodmen Circle members of Old Fort were joined by similar groups from Marion, Glenwood and Swannanoa on Monday even ing in a picnic at the Old Fort park. The Old Fort organization which has on roll 80 members meets semi-monthly at the Wood men hall in the Westerman build ing. Harry W. Swofford is chief counselor. S. L. Noblitt is fin ancial secretary. A junior feature is being plan ned. Mr. Jack Anderson Honored On Birthday 0 Mrs. Jack Anderson, of Old Fort, honored her husband, Mr. Jack Anderson, on his birthday, with a chicken fry at the Old Fort Picnic Grounds. Fried chicken, sandwi che s , drinks, and games were enjoyed by all. Special invited guests were: Mr. and Mrs. George J. Morrison, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Preston. Mr. Anderson received lots of nice and useful gifts. Miller 111, have returned to their home at Houston, Texas after a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Clyde Miller in Old Fort. 0 Mrs. R. O. Bullard of Winston- Salem is spending this week at the home of her mother, Mrs. S. F. Wilkinson at Old Fort. o Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stirewalt of Old Fort, have announced the birth of a son on Saturday Aug. 10th at Marion General hospital. o Mrs. Troy Porter and daughter Elsie Maye, of Troy, N. C., are spending a week at the home of Mrs. Porter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Allison at Old Fort. x W. C. Dennis of Old Fort was host at a week end fishing party this week. Included were: Arvil Starrs of Lexington; Robert Kerr and Ray Young of Salisbury and John Roderick of Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis have also had as their guests for the past week the latter’s father, and sis ter, G. C. Barnes of Spencer and Miss Annie Lee Barnes, Miss Frances Greene and Perry Daniel, all of Salisbury. o Mrs. W. W. LeFevre of Old Fort is a patient at the Mission hospital operation last week. She expects to return home at an early date. Mrs. James Thomas of Greens boro is spending this week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. LeFevre at Old Fort. o Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Macon spent Monday in Shelby. Members of the Old Fort Me thodist church will enjoy a picnic at the Old Fort park on Wednes day evening.
