2 Black Mountain (NC) NEWS Thursday, April 6, 1950 High School News By Eugene Hudson Tinka Crawford won the first place award in the recent writing contest, sponsored by the Black Mountain Arts Club. Entries were received from Montreat, Warren Wilson, Swannanoa and Black Mountain. Second place was given to Fred Hunt, also a student at Black Mountain high school, and a member of the junior class. Judges were members of the Ashe ville Pen Women, a national organ ization. Approximately 30 boys turned out for baseball practice, which began last Tuesday, under the di rection of coaches Tate and Morgan. Most of the home games are being played on Wednesday afternoon, in order that the merch ants can attend most of the games. In the basketball intramurals, Mr. Nesbitt’s sophomores and the freshmen are tied for first place in the boys’ division, while Woody’s 9th, the sophomores and the jun iors are all tied for first place in the girls’ division. Bor ough to the newly-created posi tion of car sales manager was announced today by C. Gordon Johnston, Charlotte istrict sales manager of the Ford Motor com pany’s Ford Division. Mr. Borough will supervise new car sales in North and South Car olina in his new assignment. He formerly was used ear and truck sales manager for the Charlotte district. Creation of the car sales de partment was necessitated by the continued development of this area as a center of automotive sales activity, Mr. Johnston said in announcing the appointment. Mr. Borough joined Ford in Jan uary, 1946, four days after his discharge from the U. S. marine corps. He was a student in the company’s orientation course and then was appointed administrat ive assistant in the truck and fleet sales department at Dearborn. players have revealed themselves in these games, and should afford some new talent for the varsity when next basketball season rolls around. . The Journalism Club had an April Fool’s party on Friday night, March 31, in the high school lunchroom. Approximately 3 5 people were present. Each mem ber of the club was allowed to ■ bring one guest, however all mem bers were not present, since there were several other activities on the same night. Round dancing and square dancing was enjoyed by those present, and several “acts” were given by some of the members of the club, after which refreshments were served. Tom my Spence served as master of ceremonies. Plans are in the making for an “open house” in the near future, where all the parents can attend and have an opportunity to see how the different classes are taught. After this, lunch will be served, and the event will be con cluded with a field day. This will consist of different athletic activ ities, such as the hundred yard dash, the running broad jump, high jump, sack race, and many other activities. The one which was held last year was very suc cessful. EASTER PROGRAM ~ There will be an Easter pro gram at the Church of God Sun day evening, April 9, at 7:30 p. m. Everyone is invited to attend. Surviving are the wife; two daughters, Mrs. Frank L. Allen and Mrs. H. L. Ingle of Swan nanoa; three sons, Clarence L., Sam J. and Carl E. Brank, all of Swannanoa; three brothers, John Brank of High Shoals and Brad and Kelly Brank, both of Icard. and a sister Mrs. Leona Haslett of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services were held in Berea Baptist church here Wednes day at 2 p. m. with the Rev. A. D. Smith, the Rev. Troy Lunsford and the Rev. W. M. Hyde officiat ing.
