Swept into office was Sheriff L. E. Brown, incumbent, who defeat ed his Republican opponent James ‘ J. Britt by a margin of two to one. Roy A. NOVEMBER 9, 1950. BLACK MOUNTAIN. N. C. Dr. McMurray Joins Faculty At Duke Durham, N. C.—Dr. Clarence McCain McMurray of Black Moun tain has joined the Duke Univers ity School of Medicine as instruct or of gastroenterology. Dr. McMurray received the B. S. degree from Presbyterian college and the M. D. degree from Bow man Gray School of Medicine. He is a member of the Phi Chi medi cal fraternity. He has had two articles published in medical mag azines. Mrs. McMurray is the former Dorothy E. Gore. They have one son, Clarence McCain, Jr. Young People To Conduct Sunday Evening Service Sunday, Nov. 12, has been des ignated by the general assembly of the Presbyterian church as ‘‘As sembly Youth Sunday.” On this day Presbyterian churches all over the assembly will be giving spec ial recognition to the work of the young people and a special offer ing is to be taken for this work. The young people of the Black Mountain church are to conduct the evening service at 7:30 and the following program has been announced by President Elaine Allison: —Turn to Page 8, this Sec. Garber of Geneva, Switzerland, will be the principal speaker at the “Aa vance” or Missionary rally to be held for the Asheville District of The Methodist Church. This rally will be held in Central Methodist church, Asheville, on Sunday af ternoon, Nov. 25, at 2:30 o’clock. New Date Set For Chicken Barbecue All veterans and their wives are eligible to attend the annual American Legion and Auxiliary chicken barbecue at Legion hall at 7:00 p. m., Wednesday, Nov 29. The date was moved back from Nov 21 because of conflicts with other events. Plans Completed For Homecoming Friday Night Coming home, grads? Remem ber the date of honor night for grads is Friday night, Nov. 10 at 8 o’clock, at the grammar school auditorium. The program for the day in cludes the football game with Swannanoa in the afternoon, the program for grads and former students at 8:00. This will in clude the honoring of two retired and one retiring teacher. Supt. T. C. Robertson and Roy A. Taylor will be the speakers. Other enter tainment will be provided and re freshments will be served. After which all grads are invited to the Sadie Hawkins dance at the High school. 5f PER COPY Beautification Os Highway Is Now Underway Digging of holes by the l.ions Club for the beautification of the highway has started. Flach Lion is asked to dig his quota or pay someone else to do it. I hey will also start with planting Nov. 21. Fred Burnette, who is giving the plants, will arrange for digging them up. Max Woodcock is in charge of trucks for hauling. W. Dean Willis is chairman of the Lions Club committee assisted by H. McGuire Wood, C. A. Stubbs and Max Woodcock. Men’s Club Sees Movie Os Trip Dr. Nelson Bell of Montreat was the speaker at the regular month ly meeting of the Swannanoa Men’s Club at the school Monday evening. Introduced by Dr. H. R. Miller, program chairman for the month, I)r. Bell showed movies made last year when he visited four conti nents and travelled more than 20,000 miles in 21 days in the interest of the foreign missions of the Presbyterian Ci urch, U. S- Strange! enough he '-pent 16 of the 21 days on the gicmd. Dr Bell flew from Miami to Brazil, across the Atlantic to Africa, to the Belgian Congo, then north to Spain, Paris, England, and —Turn to I’age 8, this Sec. Variety Show Date Announced Don’t forget the Variety Show, Friday night, Nov. 17, at 7:30 P. M. in the grammar school aud itorium sponsored by the element ary PTA. Adult tickets will be 50 cents and children’s 25 cents. The committee in charge wants to stress that this is a variety show and not a talent show. Among the interesting features on the program will be a kitchen cabinet orchestra made up of teachers. This will be under the direction of Maestro A. W. Mc- Dougle. Miss Bonnie Shuford’s first grade and Mrs. Margaret King’s second grade will appear in a Rhythm Band. Other numbers will be an nounced at a later date. Grads will register for their respective classes in the corridor. We hear that the classes of ’2B, ’3B and ’4B are really working to have the largest number present. Ralph Brown is patrolling for the class of ’2B. Mike Wyly says he has attained such stature now that he can count for two in the class of ’2B. Mrs. Lucia Carpenter has been on the ball (point pen) notif ing members of the class of ’2B. This was the first class to gradu ate from the new high school building. Welcome home, Alumni. Miss Lou Lindsey is chairman of the program committee.
