BROAD RIVER Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Knipe, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Gilliam and lit tle daughter Pattie, visited Mr and Mrs. Knipe’s son Clifford Knipe at his army base in South Carolina last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Ledbetter visited Mrs. Ledbetter’s aunt, Mrs. Carles N'oblitt, on Crooked Creek last week. Mrs. N'oblitt is very ill with pneumonia. Corena Nclon spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Grover Ledbetter. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ownbey and Clinton Hall visited Mr. and Mrs. Elliott last Sunday There is quite a bit of work go ing on on Broad River this week. The road crew is scraping the Old Fort road and the sand truckers are busy filling up the mud holes in the road. Also the Carolina Power & Light eo. is setting the poles for the power light line in this section. There is quite a bit of sickness, colds, and flu in this section. Joseph Nelon, who has been ill with flu is better. Clarence Own bey, who was ill last week, is much better. Aunt Mae Gilliam has been ill with hemorrhage of the nose and head hut is better. HERE FOR WEEK ENI> Mrs. A. C. Lewis of Marion spent last Thursday with her son and daughter-in-law and grand sons, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Uwis, Howard and Charles. SERIOU SLY ILL Mr. and Mrs. Dan Smoke and children, Danny and Ethel May, of the Asheville highway, were called to Pennsylvania Wednesday morn ing due to the serious illness of Mrs. Smoke’s mother. Aleshire, state con sultant for child welfare, is spend ing this week in Raleigh at state headquarters. ff Wanna Go Home' No cheerful little tearful is two year-old Gordon Miller, a polio patient at Utica, N. Y„ Children’s Hospital. But the March of Dimes —through the Herkimer County Chapter of the National Founda tion for Infantile Paralysis—is helping Gordon back to health and a smiling future. OLD FORT Mr. and Mrs. John White have had a recent visit from their son, Staff Sergeant Ralph McCauley, who is located with the U. S. army at Richmond, Va. Mrs. Ruth Beach has returned from a visit with relatives at Charlotte. Mrs. Mae Allison Porter and Miss Peggy Stirewalt, members ol Old Fort school faculty, attended a state school meeting in Raleigh on Saturday. Robinson at Old Fort. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Robinson of Columbia, S. C., spent the week end in Old Fort. They were guests at the home of Mrs. D. M. Mc Intosh. Mrs. Grover Fowler of Hickory and George Finch of Thomasville met the Robinsons here in connection with disposition of property owned by their rela tive, Mrs. Janie F. Reid who passed away at her home here in December. Mr. Finch was a guest at the home of Mrs. W. P. Artz. Friends of Mrs. R. P. Robinson of Old Fort who has been confined to bed suffering from the effects of a fall which occured several months ago, will be glad to know that she is able to be up in a wheel chair. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson have been at the home of their daughter and son-in-law. the Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Grose at Statesville since last summer. BROOKSIDE The missionary ladies met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Summey. One visitor was present. The Meletone quartet of Ashe ville will render a musical program at Brookside A.M.E. Zion church on Jan. 28 at 8 p. m. No admiss ion will be charged. Come and bring your friends. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Jones left Tuesday for Winter Haven, Fla, for the winter Miss Madeline Rutherford has returned after visiting her sister in Aberdeen, Md., and relatives in Brooklyn over the holidays. Mrs. Lucy Strickland has re turned from a week’s visit with her mother and relatives. Mrs. Lucy Strickland was honor ed with a surprise birthday party on Jan. 11 at Mrs. Margaret Long’s house. Mrs. Gaither, Mrs. Lucy Strick land, and Mrs. Beaulah Gaither were dinner guests of Mrs. Georgia Bowen last Sunday. WOUNDED IN KOREA Pfc. Carroll M. Owens, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe C. Owens of Swannanoa, is recuperating in a military hospital in Japan from machine gun wounds and frost bite received while fighting in Korea with a Marine unit. MRS. HOLCOMBE LEADS GROUP The Naomi Scholl Circle of the First Baptist church met Tuesday evening’, Jan. 9, at the home of Mrs. R. E. Anderson with Mrs. Eugene Byrd as co-hostess. Mrs. Harry Carland, circle chairman, presided during the business meet ing. Mrs. Bea Morford was in charge of the worship servie. An interesting program was presented by Mrs. William Hol combe. Refreshments were served fol lowing the meeting. NEWS FROM BROAD RIVER CHURCH A number of visitors were pres ent last Sunday for the ordaining of Paul F. Dotson into the dea conship, including the Rev. M L. Kirstein, pastor of New Morgan Hill church near Knka. and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sprinkle, Mr. and Mrs. Gentry, Mr. and Mrs. Gribble, Mr. and Mrs. Boone, all of Enka section. Also Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jones of Biltmore. The Rev. Mr. Kirstein spoke in the afternoon on “True Reverence To God." Many feel that his mess age was a great encouragement to our church. Communion service will be observed next Sunday at 11:30 a. m. Every member is urged to attend and be prepared to take part. New members are ex pected to come in to the church Sunday morning. Mrs. Ernest Hilfiker Is Honored With Tea Mrs. Ernest Hilfiker was honored by Mrs. E. S. Jackson and members of their sewing group with a handkerchief shower and tea last Friday afternoon at the Jackson home, Blue Ridge.
