Of course these inquiries refer to the new social security law signed by the President on August 8. It is the purpose of this and succeeding articles to explain the major changes in the social security law The new law extends and im proves the old law under which we have been operating during the past fourteen years. It not onl> provides for greater benefits tc those already covered by the pro gram, but it brings under the pro gram for the first time million! of workers whose services have no' been previously covered. As the name implies, it is insurance, not charity. It is a means wherein the worker, in his years of pro ductivitv, contributes through his earnings toward a measure of pro tection for himself in his old age and for his family when he dies. The worker’s contributions ti the social security tax are, n reality, his share of insurant premiums. The employer alsc shares in providing protection fo: his workers by contributing ai equal premium. The social secur ity card in the worker’s billfold i a symbol of his insurance policy The actual policy is the social sec urity law itself. What does his social securit; policy say? Just what arc hi rights as a policy holder in Fed eral Old-Age and Survivors In surance? In articles to follow shall endeavor to answer thes and related questions about you ; new social security.
