The death total has risen steadily since the law was abolished, “the officers can go only so far as the public will per mit,” Captain Speed said. He be lieves that education of the public to observe traffic laws for per sonal safety and establishment of traffic courts under one head will help solve the problem. "But every citizen has a per sonal duty to help the law. If only officers are to enforce the law, then our system of govern ment has come to an end. "The law enforcement agencies need the very finest material poss ible, and they can't get it without raising the pay,” he concluded. MEN'S CLUB From Page 1, this Sec. April 15, 1951 Dear Editor: Because our big brothers in Washington squabble all the time, does it necessarily follow that our little brothers down at Raleigh must do likewise ? Breathes there the man so cool. That he doesn’t sometimes act the fool, Or lives there the man with vision so clear, He always knows just how, when, and where ? If there is a characteristic that we admire more than the rest of the worthy atributes, it is per sonal pride - the kind that keeps the head and chin up, not the kind that props up the eyebrows and the nose. A ten story building needs no false front, neither does the really important man, the bigness of both is obvious. Once we knew that we knew what we knew, Now we wonder if we know any thing. At a time like this there is a dire need for more pros and fewer cons. Girls; beauty of body is ter restrial, beauty of soul is celestial. Ours is the finest, the richest, and we HOPE, the strongest na tion on earth. Let’s not let any one ism nor anv combination of isms undermine it. We always trust a righteous man, but stand in fear of a sanct imious one. Are the following claims, fact, presumption, or slander? - North Carolina had the greatest number of murders per popula tion in the U. S. in 1949. -North Carolina led all states in the production of illegal liouor in 1950. —North Carolina suffered the third lowest income per person in the U. S. in 1950. —-North Carolinians paid the high est tax per individual in the U. S. in 1950. North C arolina s average wage scale was the second lowest in the nation in 1950. —North Carolina had fewer bath tubs per population than any other Atlantic Seaboard state in 1950. _R- C. Capps.
