Our canine population is behav
ing very well indeed nnd only a
few stray dogs are to be seen in
the community from time to time.
Several were vaccinated at the
clinic held last week. Owners
should see to it that all dogs are
treated for rabies. Let none neglect
this.
Worship services were well at
tended at the Baptist church here
last Sunday evening. The pastor
preached a mighty good sermon
on Daniel, as he did aforetime.”
Our house is quiet, empty, hoi
low, a vaccum since our two grand
children returned with their
mother to Durham after a stay
of two weeks with us. The father,
James P. Morgan, returning from
Andrews where he attended a reg
ional training union convention
last week end, gathered his fam
ily in his car and left Sunday
morning carrying Elizabeth, Susan
and Maxine with him to their
home leaving the grandparents
with an aching void in their hearts
and a longing to go east, too.

Receives Honor
Nancy Ormond, a former pupil
^ the Black Mountain schools
whose poems have appeared twice
in the Poet s Corner of the creative
writing1 group, was one of the 31
winners of awards of the North
C arolina high school creative writ
ing contest which the North Car
olina Educational Committee has
sponsored for three years.
Top ranking stories, poems and
essays were entered. The winning
entries were chosen from 546
outstanding manuscripts, repre
senting 54 North Carolina high
schools. Forty-seven students re
ceived honorable mention.
Students in the high schools of
Swannanoa Valley should let this
be the incentive for them to strive
to win not only in the contest
sponsored by the creative writing
group, but also, in the next com
position committee contest of the
North Carolina Educational As
sociation.
Congratulations, Nancy. We are
proud to know that you were ours.
We still “claim you.” Best wishes
for future “laurels,” Mrs. Anna
K. Sharp, chairman, committee on
creative writing group contest,
said today.
