YOU MAY STILL REINSTATE YOUR LAPSED GI INSURANCE WHETHER YOU'RE IN SERVICE OR OUT OF SERVICE THE NEW INSURANCE ACT DOES NOT CANCEL YOUR LAPSED POLICIES ,-x For full Information contact your ncarcat VETERANS ADMINISTRATION office Holders of National Service or U. S. Government Life insurance may add disability income cover age to their policies as the restilt of a decision announced today by Carl R. Gray, Jr., Administrator of Veterans Affairs. In an official Administrator’s Decision, Gray ruled that the re cent enactment of the Service men’s Indemnity and Insurance Acts of 1951 does not bar the right to apply for addition of the disability income provision to ex isting government policies. The new legislation, Public Law 23 of the 82nd Congress, approved April 25, 1951, provided a free indemnity of $10,000 for persons in military service, and prohibited the issuance of new policies under the old plans after the date of its enactment, but protected the right to reinstate or convert such policies. Administrator Gray’s ruling holds that the prohibition against issuance of the new- policies did not have the effect of repealing a policyholder’s basic right to in corporate disability income pro tection into an existing policy so long as the applicant can meet the standard health requirements for such coverage. The provision involved in the decision is one that provides in come to the insured of $5.75 (for USGLI) or $5.00 (for NSLI) per months for each $1,000 of insur ance to which it is added, in the event of total disability lasting six consecutive months or more. The disability protection feature is available at small additional premium cost to all holders of NSLI or USGLI which was orig inally granted on or before April 25, 1951, provided the veterans are in insurable health at the time they apply for coverage, and are within the age limitations—under 05 for L’SGLI, and under 60 for NSLI. Q—My National Service Life Insurance term policy has lapsed —but the term period has not ex pired. Is it possible to reinstate it under the new “free insurance” law? I am a veteran, not on active duty. A—Yes. Your policy may be reinstated on or before—but not after—its term period has ex pired.
