OTEEN NEWS By Mrs. Janies E. Wooley Route 1 — Swannanoa, N. C. Phone: Asheville 3-1878 The W.S.C.S. of Azalea Meth odist church met Tuesday, April 15, at the Bethel Methodist church parsonage with the pastor, the Rev. M. M. Workman, as special guest. Devotionals and scripture reading were presented by Mrs. Lonnie Shelton. Opening prayer was offered by the pastor. Mrs. S. M. Johnson, guest speaker, gave a most interesting talk on her mission work in New York City. Mrs. Betty Sorrells, president, was in charge of the business session. Plans were made to install a new sink in the basement kitchen of the church. Plans were also dis cussed for a vacation Bible school to be held in June. Surprise gifts were presented to the pastor. The meeting was adjourned with prayer by Mrs. Johnson, followed by a social hour with refreshments served to the following: Mrs. R. L. Dyer, Mrs. Helen Sorrells, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Cecil Lawson, Mrs. V. G. Sorrells, Mrs. Roy Carver, Mrs. Shelton, Mrs. Betty Sorrells, Mrs. Royer Lewis, and Mrs. Wal ter G. Cooper. Guests were Royer Lewis, Mickey Brown and the pastor. The Young Adult Conquerors of Oteen Baptist church held their regular monthly meeting Monday, April 14, in the home of Miss Mary Frances Clayton on Black Mountain highway. Devotionals were given by Miss Betty Jackson. Miss Clayton, vice president, pre sided over the business session in the absence of Mrs. Geraldine Green, president. Business brought before the class were plans to ob tain a larger class room and send ing a CARE package to a des titute German family. The class also decided to visit “Uncle” Bob Henderson and to present him a fruit basket. The meeting ad journed with prayer by Peggy For rester. A social hour followed with refreshments served to: Betty Mc Kinny, Doris McKinny, Betty Me haffey, Betty Jackson, Peppy For rester, Peppy Fox, Charlotte Kinp and their teacher, Mrs. Grace Bripman. The next meeting will be held in the Forrester-Jackson home May 14. Mrs. Ethel Bailey entertained puests in her home on Craig circle on Friday, April 18. Binpo was enjoyed and prizes won by Mrs. Margaret Bailey, Mrs. Mildred Thompson, Mrs. Hilda Kirby and Mrs. Mary Sulkowski. Delicious refreshments were served to the following puests: Mrs. Mildred Horton, Mrs. G. W. Kelley, Mrs. E. P. Kirby, Mrs. Harry Baum berper, Mrs. Macy Bailey, Mrs. C. L. Bailey, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Sulkowski and Mrs. Marjorie Boyd. G. W. Kelly has returned to his home on Oteen Park place from Oteen hospital where he underwent surgery. Lewis Hawkins of Black Moun tain highway is under the doctor’s care at his home. Mrs. J. W. Shackleford of Craig circle was admitted to St. Joseph’s hospital for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schultz of Chicago w'ere guests of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Clayton at their home on Pershing avenue The C. W. Francy Unit, No. 70, of the American Legion Auxiliary held its monthly meeting Tues day, April 15, in the post home on Black Mountain highway. The meeting opened with advance of the colors by Mrs. Ruby Medlin, Sgt. at arms, a salute to the flag by the group and 30 seconds of silence observed in honor of de parted members and fighting forces. Mrs. Lillian Hawkins, chaplain, led the group in prayer, which was followed by the pre amble to the Constitution of the Auxiliary. Mrs. Pauline Green, unit president, presided over the business session. The secretary and treasurer’s reports by Mrs. Ethel Bailey, were read and accepted. The rehabilitation report was pre sented by Mrs. Sara Whiteside in the absence of Mrs. Mildred Thompson. Mrs. Whiteside also re ported on a bingo party given for the rehabilitation patients of the Swannanoa divison on March 19. Prizes were given to all patients attending, aiso refreshments of doughnuts and coffee were served by the auxiliary. Prizes were dis tributed to each patient in the ward. Membership chairman Mrs. Ruth Reisdorf reported 16 new members over their quota of 43 which means that they are the only unit in this district with such a high standing. Mrs. Medlin, chairman of the nominating com mittee, presented a panel of of ficers to be voted on at the next meeting on May 20. Mrs. Green announced that the annual dis trict meeting will be held at Tingle's restaurant in Asheville in the banquet room Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. A "Dutch” luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the Oteen unit as host ess. The group also decided to sell poppies on May 24 in Oteen. Mrs. Bailey was asked to write Gen eral Wogan for permission to sell poppies to hospital employees Fri day, May 23.
