BUCKEYE COVE By Mrs. Clyde Pickens Twenty-three persons from the Buckeye 'Baptist church were en rolled in the Central Training school last week. In the primary department were Tommy and Ron nie Owensby, David Hall, and Janet McClure. Completing the “Bap tist Junior Union Manual ’ were Sabra Briggs, Elizabeth Hall, Jerry Allen, Frank Owensby and Teddy Hall. Those completing “Witnessing for Christ” were Doris Peek, Clara Ann and Vir ginia Pickens, Ray and Roy Sut tles, Laurel Allen, Curtis Hall and Gene Peek. The Rev. J. H. Black and Clyde Pickens took “Studies in Ephesians”, taught by the Rev. Roy McColough. Mrs. Clyde Pick ens, took the vacation Bible school guide. Mrs. Curtis Hall and Mrs. Herman Owensby primary U.B.S. textbook, and Mrs. J. H. Black the beginner textbook. From May 4 through May 11 is Youth Week in the Buckeye Baptist church. The youth leaders are Wesley Hawkins, student in the ministry and pastor; Bill Rogers, Sunday school supt.; Barb ara Allen, B.T.U. director; Betty Peek, director of music; Clara Ann Pickens, pianist; Laurel Allen, chairman of the deacon board: and Betty Peek, W.M.S. president. Other young people taking part are Donald Gant, taking charge of mid-week prayer meeting, Doris Peek, program chairman for W.M.S., and Bobby Rogers, Ray and Roy Suttles, Virginia Pickens and Margaret Duncan. The Woman’s Missionary Society met Tuesday, May 6, at the church with the Young Ladies in charge of the program. Miss Betty Dun cdn, W.M.S. youth week presi dent, presided over the business period. Miss Doris Peek, W.M.S. youth week program chairman, had charge of the program, “The Multitudes Need Christian Homes.” Those taking part were: Mrs. Maxine Briggs, Mrs. J. H. Black, Margaret Duncan, Barbara Allen, Virginia Pickens, Clara Ann Pick ens, Mrs. Johnsie Allen, and Mrs. Curtis Hall gave some very inter esting discussions. Pfc. J. G. Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Early, with the 11th Airborne division, Fort Campbell, Ky., arrived home on Saturday for a few days leave. On Sunday J. G. and Howard Edwards went fishing at Lake James. Mrs. Louise Gant had as a W’eek end guest her brother-in-law and his wife. Roger Pierce spent several days visiting Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bowan and A. J. Merrill, visiting the Pickens on Saturday. Also visit ing the Pickens on Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Duncan and family. Ann Ray of Riceville road spent the night with Virginia Pickens o: Tuesday. Mrs. John McElrath is improv ing in St. Joseph’s hospital afte am operation last week. Mrs. Maxine Briggs visited ii Tennessee on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Thomas am family visited the Curtis Halls 01 Sunday. Elizabeth went horn with them for the night and b see “Mr. Texas” at Swannanoa. CARVER SCHOOL NEWS The P-TA of Carver Elementar school held their last meeting o the year Monday night, May 5. Th new officers were elected as fol lows: president, Mrs. Tannie M Daugherty; 2nd vice president Mrs. Inez Daugherty; secretary Mrs. Carrie M. Stepp; asst, secre tary, Mrs. Rippley; treasurer John Weaver; public relations com mittee, Dewey Pickins, chairman Mrs. James D. Kennedy, Mrs James Burris, Mrs. Howard Lytb and Charles Brown. Program committee, Mrs. Clin Louis, Mrs. Eddie Gibson, Mrs Wayman Stepp, Miss Geraldin Kennedy, Mrs. R. B. Pinkston am Mrs. Wilburt Lytle. Mrs. Russel’s room won tVi prize for having the most parent present at the P-TA meeting. This being “Be Kind to Animal Week,” Miss Kitchen will sho\ a puppet picture to the childrei Friday, May 9, in the school aud itorium. All parents are invited t attend. The Boys’ council will go to th Old Fort picnic ground for ai outing and picnic Friday, May 1( The first concert will be pre sented by the 1st, 2nd, and dr grades in the school auditoriun May 17. The second concert wil be held May 22. Admission wil be 15 and 25 cents. Mrs. James D. Kennedy reporte on the 10th district P-TA meet ing held at the Green River schoc in Polk county on April 19. Nav returned to Norfolk last Satur day after spending several day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs L. H. Richey. MRS. WADE RETURNS Mrs. H. L. Wade returned Sur day night from a week end vis with her daughter, Lt. Jane Ai at Fort McPherson, Ga. Also a practice 1 was held after a picnic at Mrs. Maydwells. On April 23, a matinee concert was given at the grammar school. It helped us to get over some of our stage fright before the con . cert Friday, May 2. We had been . working like mad for the concert lately, and practicing with the Glee Club Tuesday and Friday af ternoons. We have added shoulder straps ’ and silver buttons to our uniforms, ’ and citation cords are being awarded. Twenty-seven students have ex pressed a desire to join up with the band, so we expect to grow a , lot this summer. Winston Riddle gave ' a book review on “Alcohol or Ab - stinence”, a book recently donated > to the school library by the club, and plans to attend YTC camp ' w’ere discussed.
