Under a bill recently enacted
by Congress and signed into law
by the President, more than
3,000,000 veterans and dependents
of deceased veterans will receive
increases in compensation and
pension payments,
The increases become effective
July 1 and will be included in
checks which will be mailed at
the end of that month, the Vet
erans Administration announced.
A companion bill increased the
amount of income a person may
have and still be eligible for pens
ion payments in non service-con
nected disability and death cases.
Under the old limits, an other
wise eligible veteran or widow
having an income in excess of
$1,000 annually, without depend
ents, or $2,500 with dependents
could not qualify for pension.
These limits have been raised to
$1,400 and $2,700, respectively.
VA said all applicants for pens
ions whose claims were denied
under the old income limitations
and who believe they may qualify
under the new limitations will
have to file new claims for re
consideration on or after the ef
fective date of July 1, 1952. No
FRANCES KAPLAN FETED
ON 13TH BIRTHDAY
May 28 the Girl Scout Troop 52
met in Mrs. R. H. Kaplan’s back
yard. After practicing fire building
for the entire afternoon, the group
was glad to sit down to a fried
chicken supper. After this a large
birthday cake was cut honoring
Frances Kaplan on her thirteenth
birthday.
Those present were: Marie
Benge, Ann Ham, Barbara Babb,
Sadie Fortune, Donna Dotson,
Linda Lee Lowery, Melba Riddle,
Joyce Riddle. Bronte Carpenter,
Peggy Cooley, the honoree, and
Mrs. Kaplan.
automatic review of such rejected
claims will be made.
VA explained that compensa
tion is payable for service-con
nected disabilities, whereas, pens
ion is payable for permanent and
total disability resulting from
non-service-connected conditions.
Under the new law, all month
ly rates of compensation paid
veterans for service-connected dis
abilities rated from 10 to 49 per
cent are increased by 5 per cent,
while those rated from 50 to 100
per cent are increased by 15 per
cent.
Q—I expect to complete law
school this spring under the GI
Bill. May I enroll in a bar review
course, also under the GI Bill?
A—No. A bar review course
usually is a review of what you
learned, rather than an advance
ment or progression to a higher
level of knowledge. Under VA's
post-cut-off-date regulations, ad
ditional training must be a pro
gression to the next higher level.
