The project will cover the second phase of the corporation’s construction plan and will in clude buildings to be used in pro duction of ammunition and rockets. Boys, ages 7 through 12, may sign up for the program at youth center under the supervision of David Corkran. All teen-agers, both boys and girls, may sign up for activities at the youth center under the supervision of Eugene Byrd. Joyce Gouge Supervisor Joyce Gouge, recent graduate of Berea college in the fields of English and physical education, will carry on an enlarged program at the Black Mountain recreation center in the club house at Lake Tomahawk this summer. Girls ages 7 through 9 will meet at the club house on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:45 until 11:00; while girls 10 through 12 years of age will meet on Wednesdays and Fridays also from 9:45 until 11:00. Since the gates at the club house are to be locked from 10 until 11 o’clock each week day morning so that swimming classes will not be disturbed, it will be necessary for participants to be on time. Active and quiet games, folk dances, rhythms, simple dra matics, water games, and simple handicrafts will be featured in these young girls’ classes. Miss Gouge will also be on duty in a supervisory capacity at the pool and club house each af ternoon from 2:00 until 5:30. Proper behavior around the pool, the prohibition of rough play and the supervision of club house activities during the afternoon will be a large part of the work. Also work and practice for an aquacade to be presented later in the summer will be carried on at this time. Upon the completion of her summer’s work here, Miss Gouge will enroll at the University of North Carolina to complete the requirements for her Master’s Degree in physical education. Program For Small Boys Dave Corkran, well known high school athlete, will have charge of small boys’ activities for the summer. On Monday of each week boys 7, 8, and 9 will report to youth center in the high school building for instruction in sports and games. The same group will be led on hikes to points of inter est on Thursdays, with the youth center being the meeting place. Boys 10-12 will report on Wednes days for hiking activities and will practice and play softball on Fri days. Games will be arranged with little boys from Ridgecrest and Montreat during the summer. ' Also practice for the Valley Athletic association field day will be carried on. Tooth tenter program As has been their custom for the last few years, the teen agers will meet at youth center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the youth center, various sports and games will be carried on. Also the youth center will serve as a clearing house for the various activities lined up by the Valley Athletic association that include basketball and softball games, the swim meet, the field days and the ping-pong tourneys. The inter mediates, ages 12, 13, and 14— both boys and girls—will receive special attention on Wednesdays and will have contests with other groups. Eugene Byrd will assist Dave Corkran with the smaller boys on Mondays and Fridays. Supervision Supervision for the recreation program is furnished by the com munity chest through the youth activities council of Black Moun tain. Co-operating groups include the local American Red Cross chapter, the Town of Black Moun tain, the Black Mountin High school, and the Junior Woman’s club. Other civic groups and indi viduals likewise co-operate to make the recreation project truly a community project. Playground Opens Monday The playground, which is spon sored each year by the Black Mountain Junior Woman’s club on the lot next to the Methodist parsonage on Church street, will open Monday, June 16. The fol lowing hours will be observed: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Fri day afternoons, 2 to 6; Wednesday and Saturday, 10 to 12. Mrs. George McAfee will be in charge.
