Local Artists Will Enter Work For Exhibition Black Mountain artists arc to be represented in allied Artists exhibition at the Battery Park with a reception for exhibitors and guests at 8:30 p. m., Aug. 30. in the ball room of the Battery Park hotel in Asheville. Two Black Mountain artists will be repre sented in an exhibition of paint ings by professional artists and art teachers in this area. Mrs. Laura Lock, recent resi dent of Blue Ridge road, moved in to her new studio home early in June. Sponsored by the Black Mountain Arts club, Mrs. Lock has taught a class each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings in her studio or in the open She will return to Sarasota, Fla . late in the autumn where she has her own art school. Mrs. Lock will be represented in the coming show by five oils one still life “Com munion” showing the bread and wine. One portrait of a colored boy which gained recogn ition in a recent ehibition at the National Gallery in Washington. D. C.; “Sophistication", a portrait of a little local Negro girl; "Swiss Yodler", a study in light and shadows with peaks of the Alps as background. Mrs. Grace Mertle, whose studio home is also on Blue Ridge road, will enter five oils, four land scapes. Included are a church at Burnsville, N. C., a scene near Black Mountain, and two Florida scenes; also a still life "Old Fash ioned Bouquet.” Friends of these artsits and in terested visitors are invited to the opening reception and to view the works any time through Sept. 2. The works of these artists re veal strength and beauty in color and form and line; also a sureness that comes from training and wide experience as practicing artists. There were three heats consisting of boys from each den and winner of heat 1 was Howard Lewis, heat 2, Bobby Lowe, and iieat 3. Ronnie Carson. Then the winners raced Ronnie Carson won There were 10 contestan's. During the pack meeting Bob Cat awards were presented to Ronnie Carson and Bobby Lowe; SU\er arrows to Howard Lewis and two den chiefs received their braided cords, Larry Gravette and S. David Alex ander. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Nichols are visiting Mr. Nichols’ sister this week in California after several days' traveling during which they stopped at Pike’s Peak and Yellow stone Park After their visit there they will continue their sightsee ing tour. They plan to be gone two months. Mr. and Mrs Joe Kirkman and sons. Joe Jr„ Tommie and Marvin, of Greensboro visited last week with Mrs. A. B. Whitt. Billy Cable ol Greensboro is visiting his cousin. Miss Carolyn Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Porter. Mrs. W. B. Stone has returned from Kansas City after several days' visiting her new grand daughter and Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Hensley. Mr. and Mrs. Foster Stuart and daughter. Joyce. Mr. and Mrs. John Shope and family. Benny. Judy and Michael, toured last week through Virginia. West Virginia. Ohio and Kentucky. They also visited Mrs. Stuart’s and Mrs. Shope’s brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Ashley and daughters. Paula and Connie and son, Benjamin Wayne, of Columbus. Ohio. Mrs. Gus Leach of Franklin, mother of Mrs. S. D. Alexander, and Miss Rose Rodgers of Fay etteville. cousin of Mrs. Alexander, were guests over the week end of the Alexanders. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Mitchell and son, Vernon Jr., of Raleigh were visiting Mr. and Mrs Harry Davis for a week. Mr. Mitchell was in Moore general part of the time for treatment as he has been quite sick. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Robinson of Cincinnati. Ohio, were visiting Mrs. Robinson's mother, Mrs. C. L. Wingo and they were accompan ied by Mrs. Wingo to Fontana Village where they spent a week. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Taylor en tertained with an ice cream social last Tuesday evening. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Henry White sides, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. McKin ney, and Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Walker and daughters, Ann and Joan.
