1! 195? Oteen News By Mrs. James E. Woolley Route 1, Swannanoa, N. C. Phone Asheville 3-1878 Miss Zelda Mae Teems, daugh ter of Mr, and Mrs. J. E. Teems of Black Mountain highway, became the bride of Frank Wallace Kasey. son of Mrs. J. B. Kasey of Church road last Saturday evening in the Oteen Baptist church. The Rev. W. L. Bierer, pastor of the church, officiated in the double ring cere mony. A program of wedding music was presented by Mrs. Esther Bierer, vocalist, and Mrs. Edith Carter, organist. The altar was decorated with white gladioli and ferns with candel abra in the background holding lighted tapers. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of ice rank slipper satin with a sweet heart neckline and long sleeves ending in points over the hands. She wore a fingertip veil of illus ion attached to a coronet of seed pearls and rhinestones. She car ried a white Bible topped with white rosebuds with streamers of white satin. The bride’s mother wore a grey suit with black accessories and a corsage of red rose buds. The bride groom’s mother wore a grey suit with navy accessories and a cor sage of red rose buds. Mrs. Nadine Martin, sister of the groom, was matron of honor. v jri She wore a dress of robin egg blue net over taffeta fashioned with a gathered yoke and puff sleeves with matching mitts and headdress and carried a nosegay of mixed flowers. Berkley Ruiz was best man. Ushers were Arnold Teems, brother of the bride, and Howard Martin, brother-in-law of the bride groom. For the wedding trip the bride wore a navy blue suit with navy and white accessories and the cor sage detached from her Bible. Following the ceremony a re ception was held at the home of the bride’s parents. Mrs. Kasey is a graduate of Swannanoa High school and Mr. Kasey a graduate of Biltmore High school. The W.S.C.S. of Bethesda Meth odist church met Friday evening, Sept. 12 at the home of Mrs. James Tuck on Trinity Chapel road. The meeting opened with a hymn. Mrs. H. C. Miller gave the devotional using H Corinthians, fifth chapter as her scripture. The theme of the program was “That the Kingdom of God May Be Real ized.'' Those making talks on the six goals were: discipleship, Mrs. Vernon Wilder; spiritual growth. Mrs. Carl Deaton; widening fellow ship. Mrs C. B Holden; world Christian church. Mrs. C. H. Pow ers; world peace. Mrs. Charles Webb: missions. Mrs. H J. Buck ner The hvmn. “O Master. Let Me Walk With Thee" was read by Mrs. Harold Carter. Mrs. J. O. Crenshaw closed the program with praver. A short business session was held with Mrs Holden, pres ident. presiding. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mrs. J. F. Moser re ported on local work. Bethel Methodist church, met at the home of Mrs. Kate Reed on New Haw Creek road Wednesday. Sept. 10. The meeting was called to order by the chairman. Mrs. Robert Meadows, with opening prayer by Mrs. Roy .Armstrong. Mrs. Reed was in charge of the program entitled "That the Kingdom of God May Be Realized.” Scripture reading was from the fifth chapter of H Corinthians, followed with a hymn. The W.M.S. of Berea Baptist church met Wednesday. Sept. 10 at the church. The Royal Service program entitled “Japan's Puzzled People” was given. A short bus iness session was held presided over by Mrs. Rheba Ray in the absence of the president. Mrs. Donald Bateman. A discussion was held on a supper to be given for the Men’s club Tuesday. Oct. 7, at the church. Members attending the meeting were Mrs. A. D. Smith, Mrs. Zeb Nichols, Mrs. Henry Ingle, Mrs. Marion Carter. Mrs. Ray. Mrs. Laura Shope and Mrs. H C. Creasman. The W.S.C.S. of .Azalea Metho dist church held an ice cream supper Saturday. Sept. 6. at the church. Proceeds are to be used on improvements in the church. The Rev. Francis Lunsford has accepted a call to the Oak Grove Baptist church in Canton. For the next two weeks the Rev. Mr. Luns ford will hold revival sendees at Bessemer City. The D.A.V. Auxiliary. Chapter No. 7. of Oteen held their reg ular meeting Friday. Sept. 12, at the home of Mrs. Norman Zell on Church road. Mrs. James Lewis, auxiliary state commander of Greensboro, was the principal speaker. She gave a report on the national convention in Boston, and also gave the unit a national citation for membership. Reports were given by the local unit chairman on hospital and child welfare. Mrs. Lewis was presented a gift from the members of the auxiliary. Mrs. Pauline Green, unit commander, presided over the meeting. Following the meeting the members were guests of the newly formed James Ras Jones Chapter No. 38 of West Asheville. Mrs. George Stevens and Mrs. Martha Lamb gave a surprise stork shower in honor of Mrs. John Norton last Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Norton’s home. Many lovely and useful gifts were pre sented the honoree. Those attend ing were Mrs. Pansy Dockery, Mrs. Irene Lovin. Skipper of up per Grassy Branch road spent last week end in Murphy with Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Meredith, former res idents of Oteen. M/Sgt. and Mrs. Clifford Lewis and sons of Fort Bragg are spend ing a 10-day furlough visiting Mrs. Norton of Arnold road, mother of Mrs. Lewis, and S. T. Lewis of Azalea, father of Sgt. Lewis. The Rev. and Mrs. Walter 0. Cooper and children of Hickory spent last week end with Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Cooper, parents of Mr. Cooper. The Rev. Mr. Cooper is attending Lenoir-Rhyne college and will hold final services on Sunday at the Horse Shoe Meth odist church where he has been pastoring. A2C William A. Green has re turned from Portland. Ore., where he was stationed to spend a 26 day furlough with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Greene on Craig circle. At the completion of his furlough he will return to Camp Stoneman. Caiif.. for duty in the Far East. Frank Padgett is ill at the home of his daughter. Mrs. R. S. Brown on Church road. Mrs. Ethel Bailey has recovered enough to leave St. Joseph's hos pital, but for the present is with her mother, Mrs. G. W. Kelley on Oteen Park place. Mrs. Georgia Murray of Bostic is visiting her daughter and son in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Long on Tunnel road. Mrs. J. R. Thompson of Craig circle sprained her ankle last week Her condition is rather painful at this time. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Lillian Hawkins and Mrs. Billie Dorato in the recent death of their father. J. A. Shaddix in Ragland. Ala. Also to Mrs. J. M. Henderson in the death of her sister. Mrs. Callie W. Hemphill of Black Moun tain. The Haw Creek School P-TA held their first meeting this past Tuesday at 2:45 p. m. in the school. After a short business ses sion a tea was held in honor of new teachers and new P-TA mem bers. Mrs. B. K. Miller, fourth grade, gave the devotional. Patsy Lunsford played a piano selection and Coleen Burleson gave a read ing. Mrs. R. U. Garrett, Mrs. T. C. Bryson Sr., and Jennings Bryson of Sylva were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Woolley of lower Grassy Branch road. Oscar Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Lewis of Bull Moun tain road has returned to Tuscu l'jni college. Greenville, Tenn. where he is a senior. PUBLIC IS INVITED TO ARTS CLUB MEETING The Black Mountain Arts club cordially invites those interested in the cultural life of the Swan nanoa Valley to attend the annual meeting of the club Thursday evening, Sept. 18. at the Black Mountain club house. A covered dish supper will be served at 6:00 o’clock. The High School Band will be guests of the club and will entertain. Reports of each of the 4 partici pating clubs and election of two board members will follow the band program. That hall will be the winter quarters of the church with Sunday school being held there every Sunday at 10:00 a. m.. and worship services every other Sunday at 11:00 a. m. The Christian Women's Fellow ship met at the home of Mrs. Ed Dupuy Wednesday evening. A very satisfactory business session was held with a most inspiring program following. The board of the First Christian church will meet Friday evening at 7:30 p. m. at the home of B. L. Marett. All members are urged to be present. Local members of the executive board of the Christian assembly have agreed to assist Dr. H. S. Hilley. the executive secretary', by attending several state conventions of the Disciples Churches to pre sent the invitation to those states to come into the association and assist in promotion of the as sembly grounds at Black Moun tain. Dr. Hilley has personally at tended the state conventions of r the seven states that are now par ticipating in the planning. Plans are being perfected for building camping facilities for at least 10 families at the assembly grounds to be available for the summer of 1953. A shower house legion auxiliary hold MEETING MONDAY NIGHT Mrs J T. Simpson was hostess to* the first meeting of the new vear of the American Legion Aux iliary Monday night at her home. Mrs. Robert Hauth. president, presided during the meeting. Plans for the coming year s work were made and discussed Mrs. Hauth reoorted that 32 children were taken care of at the Oteen nursery last Sunday by Mrs Mor ns Gardner.
