C. BUCKEYE COVE By Mrs. Clyde Pickens The Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Black attended the funeral of Mr. Nelson Brinkley in Marion on Tuesday, Nov. 18 and going on to the burial in the Brinkley cemetery at Win dom. The Swannanoa District W. M. U. met in the Chunn’s Cove Bap tist church for a mission study on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The Chunn’s Cove W. M. U. had charge of the devotional. Swannanoa, Oteen, Buckeye, Ridgecrest and Chunn’s Cove churches answered the roll call with 108 in attendance. The mission study groups and teachers were: Adults, “Scattered Abroad,” by Mrs. C. M. Perry. Young peo ple, “Rainbow South” by Mrs. Chas. Robinson. Intermediates, “Clash of Swords,” Rev. Chas. W. Smith.-" Juniors, “Tbie Birthday Wish,” Rev. Frank Hopkins, and Primary, “A Lei For Malcolm,” Mrs. Ben Brigman. The Chunn’s Cove society served refreshments at the 8:30 break. Those attend ing from Buckeye were Mrs. Cur tis C. Hall, Mrs. J. E. McElrath, Mrs. Clyde Pickens, Miss Virginia Pickens, Miss Elizabeth Hall and Rev. J. H. Black. A stork shower was given by Mrs. Herbert Allen at her home on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in honor of Mrs. Robert Allen. The color scheme was yellow and green. Games were played and prizes won by Mrs. Susie Henderson, Mrs. Harold Calloway and Mrs. Johnnie Fugate. A good time was had by all. Refreshments were served to Mrs. Cecil Burleson, Mrs. W. R. Allen last week end. • Mrs. Carrie (Grandma) Solesby visited the past week with her daughter, Mrs. Julia Whitaker, in Asheville. Mr. C. E. Martin of Buffalo, N. Y., has been visiting with his brother, Mr. Frank Martin and family for a week. After Mrs. Martin visiting in N. Y. and Mr. Martin in Washington they visited with their son, Cecil, in Baltimore, Maryland, who is in the Navy. Mrs. Joy Bowman of Asheville, spent the week-end with her sis ter, Mrs. Johnnie Franklin in Buckeye. Capt. and Mrs. N. B. Hulbert spent last week with relatives in Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pangle and daughters visited relatives in Ten nessee on Sunday, Nov. 23. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Pickens at tended the Swannanoa District B. T. U. meeting at Black Mountain Baptist church on Sunday after noon. Afterwards visiting Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Fortune on Blue Ridge road. The Fortunes bought their small son, Art Rodney, home from the hospital on Saturday, where he has been in an incubator since Sept. 22. He is a healthy looking, fine boy and a good ex ample of our modern day miracles. Mr. FYemont Hurt was home ove’’ the week-end from Newport News where he is employed. Misses Elaine and Eunice Cala han and Janet McClure spent the afternoon with Miss Doris Peek on Sunday. The Hall family gave a birthday dinner for Mr. W. T. Hall of Swannanoa at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Hall on Sunday, Nov. 23. Mr. Hall was 79 on Mon day, Nov. 24. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Millard Hall of Can ton, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest King, Evelyn, Hubert, William, Wayne, Doris, Reva, Eva Mae, Hurley and Clyde of Newfound. Jerry Allen and Horace Stephen son drove Miss Barbara Allen back to Newport News, Va. after her visit home last week. BEE TREE NEWS By Mrs. C. M. Howie Mrs. Doyle Howie and children visited Mrs. Howie’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Shephard at Mars Hill over thf week-end. Her broth er, Kenneth, of Fort Jackson was also home for the week-end. He has rented an apartment down there and his wife is returning with him. We had several visitors at the Sunday morning service at the Bee Tree Baptist church. We were sorry to learn that the Rev. Cameron’s little son is quite ill at his home in Oakley. Mrs. Ama Barnwell was taken quite sick Friday at her home be low Swannanoa. Her husband was called out of the mill. Mrs. Dorothy Morgan is sick at her home on Bee Tree. Mrs. W. E. Duckett of Bee Tree road, who has been in failing health for several years has been much worse for the past two weeks. Arthur Brooks and children moved to his brother Clifford’s house below Swannanoa last week. Mrs. Gertrude Howie and Mr. and Mrs. Stokley Brooks, attend ed the funeral of Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Howie’s uncle, Will Davis, at Hirkorv Inst Johnie Sawyers and wife were in an automobile accident last Friday night involving two cars. Johnie was shaken up pretty bad ly and his wife’s injuries were to the extent that she was hospital ized. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryant and daughter were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Hall Sunday. Their son Howard visited with his cousin William Loyn Howie, Jr. The Rev. Mr. Cartees, evang elist, delivered a wonderful mes sage at the Bee Tree Baptist church' Sunday night. There was another minister and his wife from Greenville visiting us Sunday night. Mrs. Lloyd Rogers, employee of Beacon, is leaving this week to join her husband who is now employed at Newport News, Va. She was honored with a going away party at the S&W in Ashe ville last Friday night by the ladies who worked with her at Beacon. She received several nice gifts. There were about 30 attend ing. They said they all had a wonderful time. Doyle Howie of Bee Tree is now employed at the Ford plant in Michigan. His wife and children are staying with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Howie. We had a wonderful rain last Wednesday and Wednesday night on Bee Tree. It settled the dust1 and brought the springs back to life. We were really proud of it. Look Who’s Here! Mr. and Mrs. H. D. HOME DEMONSTRATION CLUB HEARS TALK ON "PICTURES FOR HOME" The Home Demonstration club met at the home of Mrs. W. T. Miller Monday, Nov. 24, for an all-cay meeting and covered dish luncheon. Mrs. Mamie Sue Evans, comity home demonstration agent spoke on pictures for the home, showing prints of various kinds. A second part of the program was about Christmas ideas, including gifts and decorations. Those attending were: Mrs. W. D. Hyatt, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Charles Clevenger, Miss Mary MacKay, Mrs. L. C. Jumper, Mrs. Finley Stepp, Mrs. John Melton, Mrs. Ernest Austin, Mrs. Charles E. Long, Mrs. Fred Cook, Mrs. Wil liam Hinkle, Miss Helen Miles, Mrs. Sam Morris, Mrs. W. B. Kyles, Mrs. Bill Harless and the hostess. With The Sick Mrs. J. H. Gruver is sick at her home. Jones Earl Corwin is critically ill in Duke hospital, Durham. Mrs. W. T. (Bill) Goodson is still a patient at St. Joseph’s hos pital. Dr. R. C. Anderson of Mon treat continues to be ill at St. Joseph’s hospital. Mrs. Myrtle Johnston continues ill at her home. Miss Minnie McBride, 77 Kenil worth road, Asheville, is able to be up again. Mrs. Benjamin Hardwick’s con dition remains about the same. She is at her home on Montreat road. Joe Whittington has been sick with a severe cold. Mrs. G. C. Carson has been sick with a cold. Mrs. Raph Bernhardt is much better after being sick for sev eral weeks. Mrs. J. R. Pettigrew has been sick at her home for several weeks. Mrs. Carter C. Uzzell is a pa tient at St. Joseph’s hospital. CHRISTIAN CHURCH C.W.F. MEETS WITH MRS. LEE BUTLER The C.W.F. of the Black Moun tain Christian church met at the home of Mrs. Lee Butler Monday night, Nov. 17. Mrs. Myrtle Harper __ of Wendell, N. C., gave the de votional. A very enlightening re port on “Human Rights” was made by Mrs. Walter Davis. Sev eral members, who had attended the Raleigh convention, gave in teresting reports. Those present, were: Mr. anc Mrs. M. VALLEY MUSIC GROUP MEETS AT COLLEGE The Swannanoa Valley Inter Church Association held its an nual Thanksgiving service Nov. 26 at 7:30 o’clock at Warren Wilson college. Bernard Laursen assist ed by the farm crew decorated the chapel for the occasion. WSCS SETS MEETING The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service of the Methodist church will meet in the fellowship room on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p. m. The Christmas theme will be carried out through the worship service led by Mrs. Douglas Jones, and the program conducted by Mrs. Lea Seagle. CARVER SCHOOL NEWS The P-TA is sponsoring the Blue Ridge Gospel Chorus in a program in the school auditorium Friday night Dec. 5 at 7:30. No admission. The public is invited. Come early for a good seat. The “Y” Teen group is busy working on an exhibit in Arts and Crafts. The Boy Scouts are planning a surprise for some family on Thanksgiving Day. The Brownie Troop of Carver School attended a meeting in Asheville at the David Millard School recently. Film strips are shown after correlating the vari ous units of study the teachers are developing. The Scouting program is making much progress this year. Both boys and girls have organ ized the patrol system. The boys and girls council met Monday as usual at which time plans were made for a community project for the year. The student body enjoyed a well planned Thanksgiving program Monday presented by the first and second grades with Mrs. R. B. Pinkston in charge. GOSPEL SINGING SET FOR SUNDAY NIGHT There will be two hours of gos pel singing at the Gospel Mission Sunday night at 7:30 o’clock. Special groups from out-of-town are expected to be present. These will include the Blue Ridge quar tette of Marion, the Weatherly family of Swannanoa, and the Metcalf children of Flag Pond, Tenn. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
