Four of the Lanning brothers were pitchers, Tom, who was a member of the Philadelphia Phil lies for a short time, John and two of his brothers. All pitched for Biltmore High school. Roy Taylor reminded John after the Lions meeting that his mother, Mrs. "Lanning, had once said that she had furnished pitchers for the Biltmore high school team for 17 years. Although he has been called by more than one expert the greatest all-round athlete Bun combe county ever produced — football, baseball, and basketball — John Lanning is still the same modest gentleman that he was in high school and college. He was always quick to recognize his own mistakes and minimize his own efforts to give some one else credit for a touchdown or a goal scored. He was, perhaps, the best passer Western North Carolina has seen. He threw a pass that was soft and fluffy and easy to catch. It didn’t take a good rt ceiver to hang on to one of his passes, he just stuck it under your arm and dared you to drop it. Distance meant little. He could thread a needle at 20 yards or at 50 with little apparent effort. He and Herbert Sanders ex changed stories of the ball park at Nashville, Tenn., which both agreed is hard on the outfield ers playing the "bluff." As a member of the Knoxville Smok ies John won 14 games for a tail end club that won only 42 games for the year. This won him a promotion to Boston. Orphanage “Operation Christmas” arrived at the Mountain Orphanage Mon day morning slightly behind schedule but Santa Claus was none the less welcome. Although the crowd of children and adults had waited for some time in the chilly weather, the appearance of the helicopter from the Pope air force base at Fort Bragg brought cheers from old and young. Then when Santa Claus stepped out, his arms loaded with gifts, the picture was complete. The event was adequately cov ered by photographers from the Asheville Citizen-Times, the Black Mountain News, Life Magazine, and several private picture makers. Piloting the plane was Lt. Len Hughes, who formerly was pilot for Admiral Joy at Panmunjom, Korea. Hughes was credited with flying 54 combat missions and bringing 97 seriously wounded in fantrymen to safety with the famed Third Rescue squadron in Korea. At least three times he ventured far behind enemy lines to rescue downed Sabrejet and Thunderjet pilots. One of the helicopters was forced down on North Fork while searching for the Orphanage field but no one was injured. Each gift delivered to the child ren here had been purchased at the request of child, carefully wrapped, and tagged with the cor rect name. Dolls and guns ruled the favor ites. There were 436 requests for dolls and 287 for guns. Skates, cosmetics, and costume jewelry were just about tied for third place. Fifteen children indicated they wanted Bibles. The purchas ing committee spent many hours selecting 1500 separate items of clothing. “Operation Christmas” is an activity conducted each year by the Ninth Air Force at Pope air force base at Fort Bragg. Ar rangements for the visit were completed by Harry Barkley, orphanage superintendent. With The Sick The Richard Hughey family is much better after being ill with the flu. Mrs. B. M. Barnwell, Patton Cove road, is much improved after being sick for several weeks. Restrictions on the slaughtering of livestock in North Carolina have been lifted by the Office of Price Stabilization, District Direc tor J. Ray Shute has revealed.
