Leigh Brittain and Preston Os teen attended the sixth birthday party of Roby Braswell in Morgan ton last Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Phillips spent from Wednesday to Sunday of last week with his family, Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Phillips in Talla geda, Ala. Dinner guests of Mrs. George W. Read at the Battery Park hotel, Asheville, last Sunday included Mrs. Sue Sanderson and Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Wood. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Nanney at tended the funeral services of Mr. Nanney’s brother, Robert Nanney, at the First Baptist church in Marshall last Thursday. Mr. Nan ney died in Charleston, S. C., on Feb. 19. Mrs. R. E. Mr and Mrs. Joe Mackney and children, Suzanne and Ronald Scott, arrived Tuesday night for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald E. Finch. Mr. Mack ney will be here for a week be fore going to Washington to take over his new duties as registrar specialist. Mrs. Mackney and children will remain here for an indefinite period. They have been residing in Northhampton. Mass. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Justus re turned last Friday night from a two weeks’ vacation spent in Florida. Havana and Nassau. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kerlee, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reed, Jr. left last Friday for a week’s va cation at Bradenton Beach, Fla. Miss Natalie White of New York and Mrs. Edna Bowles of Chicago are visiting in this vicin ity. They plan to make their home in Western North Carolina. Mrs. Sue Sanderson of Charlotte is visiting Mrs. George Read for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. William Hummer and son, William II, returned last week from a 10-day visit with his brother-in-law' and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William DeWaters of Arl ington, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Oland Wilson, who were injured in an automobile accident near Kingsport, Tenn., several weeks ago, are getting along nicely at the Holston Val ley hospital, Kingsport. The Wil sons’ four children, who were with them at the time of the ac cident. have been discharged from the hospital and are with members of Mrs. Wilson’s family. Mr. and Mrs. Emery Harwood are now occupying an apartment in the Fleetwood annex. Mrs. Har wood is the former Miss Evelyn Franks. They were married in Greenville, S. C., Feb. 14. Miss Louise Sloan of Albermarle, N. C., spent the week end with her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dougherty. Miss Bernice Hall of Morgan ton spent last Thursday and Fri day at her home here, “Fairlawn Lodge." All tlit? little streams were out o£ bank Saturday morning. Our crossing had drift ed 10 ft. high against our foot log and we couldn't cross until the drift was moved out. The sun came out around noon Saturday and by Sunday the ground had dried out considerably. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Howie had as their guests Sunday Mrs. Howie's sister, her husband and their daughter-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jenkins and Mrs. Herbert Jenkins of Crooked Creek in Mc Dowell. Mrs. Herbert Jenkins hus band is overseas. Mr. and Mrs. Loyn Howie had as their guests Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Wade Worley of Black Mountain and their little son. Mrs. Worley is Mrs. Howie’s sister. Loyn Howie took Pvt. James M. Howie to the airport Sunday to make reservations on the plane to Seattle. Wash. He leaves Mon day around noon His destination is Ft. Lewis. Wash. His father. C. M. Howie and Wade Worley also accompanied them to the airport. Lawrence Howie took him Satur day. It seems to be very hard to get reservation on the plane. Elmer Burnett of the Bee Tree road visited the C. M. Howies and his mother. Mrs. W. C. Burnett, Sunday afternoon at their home on the Long Branch road. Wesley Burnett, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Burnett of the Bee Tree road, returned home from Korea last Sunday after spending six or seven months over there. Lloyd Bragg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Gragg of Upper Shope Creek, returned home last week after spending 19 months in Korea. Wyona Howie and little Ronnie Howie are very sick at their home on the Long Branch road at the time of this writing. We were grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Alice Gragg Cordell of Upper Shope Creek, who passed away at the Beverly Hills heights nursing home last Monday morn ing at 9:30. She was 85 years old. We wish to extend our greatest sympathy to all the family and rel atives. Our pastor, the Rev. Cameron, won a trip to Bermuda for the top sales of the U. S.. He left last week for New York and was to sail the past week with his wife. The Rev. Casidy, pastor at Burns ville. is filling in at the Bee Tree Baptist church while our pastor is away. He is to be away two weeks. John Bryant, his wife and little son. Ralph, and Mrs. Effie Luns ford. came in from Michigan last Friday night for a few days. John Bryant is Mrs. Thomas G. Hall’s son. Joe Reece of Montreat visited his daughter, Mrs. Thomas G. Hall, while she was ill with the flu. Roy Reece visited her the first of last week. He has completed his basic training in Texas and is sche duled to leave for Ft. Lewis. Wash. Monday or Tuesday. Pvt. and Mrs. James M. Howie visited Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith and children Sunday afternoon at their home on Long Branch. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Severson’s little girl has just gotten over an attack of chicken pox. and now lit tle Teddy Anderson, son of Mrs. Francis Anderson, is with them. Pvt. and Mrs. James M. Howie visited Mrs. Howie’s step father. Murley Williams, at the Moore VA hospital last week end. He is much improved. Aunt Carrie Shope of Bee Tree road is still slowly improving. We hope she will soon be well and out again. It has been learned that Mrs. Doyle Howie of Lincoln Park. Mich., is much improved following recent illness. BUCKEYE COVE By Mrs. Clyde Pickens Arlie Peek arrived home last Thursday with his discharge from the army, everyone in Buckeye is happy to have him back. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pierce are spending two weeks vacation in Florida. Their son, Roger, is stay ing with Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bow man and Betsy is staying with Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Merrill. Rev and Mrs. J. H. Black are ill with the flu. Rev. Black brought the message at Buckeye Sunday morning against doctors orders but Rev. L. 0. Vess filled the pulpit for him on Sunday evening. Mrs. Kate Swain visited with rel atives in Buckeye Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Jackson were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Marion McElrath Sundav. Sabra Briggs and Brenda Pangle spent the day with Peggy McElrath Sunday. Mr." and Mrs. Clyde Pickens. Clara Ann and Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Buchanan. Corabelle and Danny visited with Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Willis and family in Spruce Pine Sunday. Mr. Willis is very ill following a heart attack. The group got to see a large group of friends and relatives that were also calling on Mr. Willis Mrs. Herman Owensby has been suffering from a very painful arm that she got a splinter into. Fremont Hurt was home over the week-end from Newport News Va.
