The genera! meeting of the Wo men’s Missionary Union of the First Baptist church met Tuesday night, April 14, with thirty-- ;x members of the various circles at tending. The meeting was opened with singing “Rescue The Perish ing" and repeating the W. L. wa'xfcword in unison. Mrs. f rec Davidson, president, conducted the business session and reports were given by the Community Mission chairman from the circle-, of ac tivities engaged in during the past month. Members were asked to turn in the Progress Fund at the May meeting. After singing “Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone,' the meeting was turned over to the Neale Young circle who presented the program on ‘ Our Neighbor Mexico.’ Mrs. M. C. Taylor gave the devotionals from I Corinthians 16:1-9. Mrs. Grady Melton pre sented a most interesting talk on the “Country of Mexico, Our Neighbor and the People of Mex ico." Mrs. D. L. Shaver told of a Mexican family and how \ ictor accepted Jesus as his Saviour. Mrs. Bob Carson presented the “'Place of Women In Mexico,’ and Mrs. Shaver gave the conclusion. Fred Nichols, Jr., a jet pilot en route from Moody Air Force base at Valdosta, Ga., to Shaw Air Base at Sumter, S. A. s of the First Baptist church visited Mrs. George Jones last Saturday eve ning and took her a basket of fruit. BUCKEYE COVE By Mrs. Clyde Pickens Prof, and Mrs. Elmer O. Hoff man of Schenectady, N. Y., were visitors last week at the Jims Branch home of Capt. and Mrs. N. B. Hulbert. Prof. Hoffman was a former physics instructor of the Captain’s and for many years was principal of the Schenectady High school. Later he was associate professor of physics at Union col lege. Schenectady, and prominent in war time scientific research in the world famous GE laboratory. The Hoffmans on their first visit to Western North Carolina were delighted with the mountain coun try and expressed the wish to re turn for an extended stay in the vicinity of Black Mountain. Mrs. Hoffman is a decendant of the Linvilles of the Linville Falls re gion and was looking forward to a visit to that section on their trip north. Mrs. Frederick Volbeda and daughters. Millie. The meeting was opened with the sing ing of "The Woman’s Hymn." Mrs. Sam Pangle was in charge of the devotional period. A group of ladies and the pas tor of Buckeye plan to attend the annual associational W.M.U. meet ing at Beaverdam Thursday begin ning at 9:45. The Emma Baker circle meets Thursday evening. April 23, with Mrs. W. C. Peek. Taking part in the Associational B.T.U. contest at First Baptist church Sunday afternoon were Mrs. Curtis Hall in the Adult Bible Reading, and Elizabeth Hall and Peggy McEIrath in the Junior Memory work. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Padgett, visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ayers, were visitors at Buckeye Sunday morning. Funeral services for Mrs. W. A Black, 80, who died Friday after noon at her home in Windom af ter a brief illness were held Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Black was the mother of Rev. J. H. Black, pastor of Buckeye Baptist church. Other survivors are the husband, one daughter. Mrs. Lon Smith of Burns ville and five other sons, Ernest and Glenn of Marion, the Rev. Her bert Black of Johnson City, Tenn . Roy of Pickens, S. C., and Brady of Windom. Among the folks at tending the funeral from Buckeye were, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Peek Mrs. M. D. Gant, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bryant, Mr. Albert Richard son. Mr. Chas.
